On an international scale, his most famous work features prominently in Gurinder Chadha's film Bend It Like Beckham. He worked together with Amitabh Bachchan for a musical rendition of Harivansh Rai Bachchan's poetry and produced Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's album Magic Touch.
Bally Sagoo has acquired many designations, to mention a few, “Godfather of Bhangra”; “The mix-master”; “One of UK’s top 10 Asian Success Stories”. It’s taken a lot for Sagoo to acquire these titles and his story starts back in the 1980’s when he felt there was no funky Indian music. Living in the ghetto areas of Birmingham UK, he soon got a taste for black music. Motown, reggae and soul were the type of music he wanted to hear. Sagoo began a personal crusade to fill the void. I still remember sitting on the floor of our council flat living room.
It was summertime, the windows were open, the net curtains were swaying in the wind. Kids playin bulldog, kickin a ball around, kids on bikes riding down the little hills, and missing the obviously haunted shed by an inch.
B4U was on loud and the VJs were playing straight bangers. The TV was of course connected to the HiFi system, flowery print tea cloth and tea cosy and plant on top as well, obviously. And this ABSOLUTE BELTER came on. Baba made the gesture to me to turned the volume to max on the HiFi and for once mum didn't say to turn it down. She didn't show it but I knew that deep down inside she was probably thinking "rah , this a banger still u kno."
Mum was washing in the kitchen, Baba was boppin his head with a smirk on his mustache. I was jumpin up and down goin straight HAM fam. I can still smell and feel that day. I didn't know times were rough back then, its all we knew. I was just straight vibin' from a young age with my mum and dad and I hope to continue doing the same now that they're older.
