Band of Horses was formed by Ben Bridwell (guitar, vocals) and Mat Brooke (guitar) in 2004 after the break-up of their previous band, Carissa's Wierd. Rob and Creighton were formerly of the mathrock band The New Mexicans before joining Band of Horses. The group initially got attention from Sub Pop records after opening for Iron & Wine in Seattle area shows. In 2005, the band released their debut EP, Band of Horses Tour EP, which was sold exclusively at shows and on Sub Pop's website. Their debut full-length, Everything All the Time was recorded in 2005 with producer Phil Ek and released on March 21, 2006 to generally good reviews.
On July 13, 2006, Band of Horses appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman sans Brooke. As of July 25, 2006, Mat Brooke left Band of Horses to focus more on his other band, Grand Archives, who had also signed to Sub Pop.
The band's second album, Cease to Begin, was released on October 9 2007. The band has recently moved its base of operations from Seattle to Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina
Their album, Infinite Arms, was released in May of 2010.
Their album, Mirage Rock, was released in September 2012.
Their latest album, Why Are You OK? was released in June 2016.

Then appearness left for all too late
Greatness achieved, and darkness defeated
Ram shack crew with something to prove
And the truck blew up believe it
You see me go, there's something coming your way
So say it to me, say it to my face
There's no time to be reserved or safe
Call just chill, whenever
Glory till the end
Everything I want, and everything I'll get
It's coming now, It's going down
The stars are falling, walls are coming all of hour
Knocking on the doorway, look who's coming your way
Everything I want, everything I need
Knocking on the door
Knocking on the door
Knocking on the door
Knocking on the door
Ooh ooh, ooh ooh
No one's gonna know it
The right ones are green
Proving wrong the other one's winning
We're fine, when I'll win
Look what's in the doorway
There's something coming your way
Everything I want, everything I need
Knocking on the doorway,
Hey look what's coming your way
It's everything I want, It's everything I need
Knocking on the door
Knocking on the door
Knocking on the door
Knocking on the door
Knocking on the door
Knocking on the door
Knocking on the door
Knocking on the door
Knocking on the door, ooh ooh, ooh ooh
The lyrics of Band of Horses's song Knock Knock seems to be about achieving greatness and going after one's dreams. The opening lines, "Better things come to those who wait, then appearances left for all too late, greatness achieved, and darkness defeated" suggests that waiting patiently for good things to happen can lead to success, while delaying or procrastinating can lead to missed opportunities. The next lines, "ram shackle crew with something to prove, and the truck blew up believe it" refers to the idea of not letting setbacks and failures hold one back from achieving their goals.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the theme of going after what one desires, with lines such as "Everything I want, everything I need, It's coming now, It's going down, the stars are falling, walls are coming all of hour." The repeated line "Knocking on the door" creates a sense of urgency and determination as the singer is pushing forward towards their aspirations. The final lines of the song, "No one's gonna know it, the right ones are green, proving wrong the other one's winning, we're fine, when I'll win," suggests that the singer is confident in their ability to succeed despite obstacles or doubts from others.
