After The Ball
Barbara Cook Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A little maiden climbed an old man's knee,
Begged for a story, "Do, Uncle, please."
Why are you single; Why live alone?
Have you no babies, have you no home?"

"I had a sweetheart, years, years ago:
Where she is now, pet, you soon will know.
List to the story, I'll tell it all.
I believed her faithless, after the Ball."

After the ball is over
After the break of dawn
After the dancer's leaving
After the stars are gone
Many a heart is aching
If you could read them all
Many the hopes that have vanished
After the ball.

Bright lights were flashing in the grand ballroom
Softly the music, playing sweet tunes
There came my sweetheart, my love, my own
I wished some water, left her alone

When I returned, dear, there stood a man
Kissing my sweetheart, as lovers can
Down fell the glass, pet, broken that's all
Just as my heart was, after the ball

After the ball is over
After the break of dawn
After the dancer's leaving
After the stars are gone
Many a heart is aching
If you could read them all
Many the hopes that have vanished
After the ball.

Long years have passed, child, I've never wed
True to my lost love, though she is dead
She tried to tell me, tried to explain
I would not listen, pleadings were in vain

One day a letter came from that man
He was her brother, the letter ran
That's why I'm lonely, not home at all
I broke her heart, After the ball

After the ball is over
After the break of dawn
After the dancer's leaving
After the stars are gone
Many a heart is aching
If you could read them all
Many the hopes that have vanished
After the ball.

After the ball is over
After the break of dawn
After the dancer's leaving
After the stars are gone
Many a heart is aching
If you could read them all

Many the hopes that have vanished
After the ball.

Overall Meaning

The song "After the Ball" tells the story of an old man who is approached by a child asking him about his single and childless status. He then proceeds to tell her a story about a lost love. The story goes that he had a sweetheart many years ago, and when they went to a grand ball one night, he left her alone to fetch some water. When he returned, he found her kissing another man, and in his heartbreak, he believed her to be faithless. He never listened to her explanations and pleadings, and eventually, she passed away. Years later, he found out that the man he saw her kissing was actually her brother, and he had broken her heart by not listening to her explanations.

The song is a powerful depiction of the devastating consequences of misunderstandings and miscommunication in a relationship. The old man's regrets and loneliness speak to the universal experience of loss and the awareness that sometimes, opportunities to make amends are lost forever. The refrain of "After the ball is over" emphasizes the idea that sometimes, it's only after the moment has passed that we fully realize the impact of our actions and decisions.

Oh, how MARVELOUS to hear this again!  I fell in love with it when it was played on my local good music station back in the early 60's.  Barbara Cook knocks it out of the park!  What a gorgeous rendition!  Many thanks for sharing!

I gave up show business and went back to school. Pre. Med. 37 years as a family doctor
I saved music as a hobby. I have 4 OCTAVES. A vibrato. And a sense of humor. This old Broad still sings. After the Ball. A lovely song sold a million copies of sheet music. Published in 1910. Let's us never forget the old days of. Romance and young ladies in the family parlour belting it out.
