Barbra Streisand Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One less bell to answer
One less egg to fry
One less man to pick up after
I should be happy
But all I do is cry
Cry, cry, no more laughter / Oh, I should be happy
Oh, why did he go?
I only know that since he left
My life's so empty
Thought I try to forget
It just can't be done
Each time the doorbell rings
I still run
I don't know how in the world
To stop thinking of him / I should be happy
Cause I still love him so
I end each day the way I start out / I start and end each day crying
Crying my heart out
One less bell to answer
One less egg to fry
One less man to pick up after
No more laughter
No more love
Since he went away
Since he went away
A chair is still a chair
Even when there's no one sitting there
But a chair is not a house
And a house is not a home
When there's no one there
To hold you tight
And no one there
You can kiss goodnight
A room is still a room
Even when there's nothing there but gloom
But a room is not a house
And a house is not a home
When the two of us are far apart
And one of us has a broken heart
Now and then I call your name
And suddenly your face appears
But it's just a crazy game
And when it ends
It ends in tears
So darling, have a heart
Don't let one mistake keep us apart
I'm not meant to live alone
Turn this house into a home
When I climb the stair and turn the key
Oh, please be there
Still in love with me
One less bell to answer / Each time the doorbell rings, I still run
One less egg to fry / I'm lucky I've got one less man
One less man / to pick up after
No more laughter
No more love
Since he went away

Since he went away
All I do is cry.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Barbra Streisand's "One Less Bell to Answer / A House Is Not a Home" tell the story of a woman who is dealing with the aftermath of a breakup. She is relieved to have one less person to take care of, but ultimately, she cannot seem to shake off the sadness and emptiness that she feels. She still loves him deeply and cannot stop thinking about him, even though he is gone. Each time the doorbell rings, she hopes that it might be him, but she is always disappointed. She longs for the intimacy and affection that they once shared, and she feels alone and lost in her empty house.

The second half of the song shifts the focus from the emotional to the physical. The woman acknowledges that a house is not a home without someone to share it with. She describes the empty rooms and the loneliness that she feels when she is alone. She longs for her partner to be there with her, to hold her close and kiss her goodnight. She reaches out to him, calling his name and hoping to see his face, but it is all in vain. She pleads with him to come back to her and turn their house into a home once again.

Barbra Streisand's "One Less Bell to Answer / A House Is Not a Home" is a poignant and emotional song that captures the pain and loneliness of a breakup. It is a universal theme that many people can relate to, and Streisand's powerful vocals and heartfelt performance make the lyrics all the more moving.

Haven’t looked at all the comments to see if someone already alerted you to that, unfortunately, you got the Artdeco house a bit mixed up she “sold” that house around 1993.

I say “sold” because actually that house was just one of a handful of homes she designed on a 24 acre property she actually donated, not sold, to the State of California around 1993.

“Entertainer Barbra Streisand has donated her lavish 24-acre Malibu estate to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy for a conservation institute, a gesture conservancy officials are comparing to the historic gift of Will Rogers’ ranch to the state park system in 1944.

One of the houses on the property, featured in a cover article in the December issue of Architectural Digest, is a monument “down to its door knobs,” according to the magazine, to Streisand’s fascination with Art Deco style.

The magazine said her collection of Art Deco furniture and decor will be sold at a New York auction house in March.

Edmiston said, however, that the conservancy wants to keep the furniture, which he described as integral to the spirit of the house. “We’re gong to ask if she would donate that. Or, maybe some payment can be made for some of the pieces.

Other houses on the property, according to Edmiston, include two “country-style dwellings"--one suggesting a sumptuously remodeled barn--and a Mediterranean-style villa with a 2,000-square-foot projection room…”

Otherwise you got the rest of it right… FYI if you think the mall is a little bizarre, she loves roses and there has been a genetically created rose created and named for her.

She loves pink and it’s outside one of her main rooms—- it matches the exact color of the walls.

When Rosie interviewed at her home for her talk show… she noticed the color of the roses outside perfectly matched the walls on the inside…

And Barbra said rhetorically, “yes… isn’t the outside is just an extension of the inside?” (Oh Barbra🙄🤭😜)

That 24 acre plot became a hiding place for her of sorts. There was a time where she didn’t do public preforming (over 20 years of never preforming live… so when she wasn’t involved with creating recording projects and recording those records or film producing/directing/staring, she said she got lost in building and designing homes… that’s where that 24 acre plot comes into the story and the real reason why she donated it, so the rumor goes, is that she couldn’t get the asking price… I mean, who wants 5 or 6 huge period houses, each designed to the door knobs to the exact detail?

Smart business discussion… that is then what got her to the area where she now lives… wanting the main house, as you reported, but owners wouldn’t sell and over a decade later purchasing the property’s adjacent until it finally came on the market.

As you said, the Mall sounds cray-cray until one realizes it’s really a place designed for her hobby of collections dolls, lace, costumes and other memorabilia of things, so instead of like most people putting them in storage and most likely never seeming them again… they have not only a specific place for them, they can be appreciated by her and others.

She also has a fully working recording studio on the land where she has recorded her last couple of records including a semi-recent duets album here is a link, with the incomparable Patrick Wilson (not sure if you knew he is a very successful musical theatre actor as well, as movie actor you can see it.

She turns 80 in a couple of weeks on April 24. Nice little reminder of the only woman to have chart-toppers in every decade since 1960 she tied with Bob Dylan.

Streisand has the most top-40 charting albums in female history, with Release Me 2, last year, it brought her total to 58. Behind her is Aretha Franklin, who has 26. She still holds the title as the fastest and youngest female entertainer to become an EGOT, she achieved it at the young age of 28, in her first five years in show business she won all 4 of the most coveted awards in every avenue in show business: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.

I have her design book on the home she designed, it’s amazing, it is like living in a home on the East Coast with much better weather. It truly is filled with beautiful things, the yard and gardens are exquisite! One thing, her name is Barbra, not Barbara, it’s misspelled in the title.

@susanspiegel1941

I was 16 when I first fell in love with her, My husband took me to Las Vegas for a New Years eve show. I have every album of hers. I am 76 now and still love her. When we were in Maui we were at a brunch and my husband said here comes your idol and Don't go over to her. Well I went up to her at the shrimp display and apologized for invading her space, she was very gracious to me. I have all her albums, her book about her home and am looking forward to her new book. I almost forgot, my son took me to Barbra's concert at the pond, and she repeated the concert for HBO that night. Barbra I still adore you. You look so beautiful. I am also very proud of you. You are perfect at everything you do. One more thing, I loved James Brolin when he was in the show with the doctor. Dr. Welby? When you married 25 years ago I felt such joy. I still love him as well. I also agree with you who should NOT be President.

@michelledowdy500

Love this. This is by far my favorite house. She looks incredible. ❤️

@helloxonsfan

100% agree...!!! And I also love that she created a full backstory for the house... wouldn't expect anything less from a glorious legend like Streisand...!!! ❤ ❤ ❤

@valerielyda6414

Waterwheel is fabulous and the stonework is impressive. Landscaped gardens are memorable. So lucky for her to have the magnificent Pacific Ocean as a constant showstopper view.

@helloxonsfan

Beautiful property...!!! And I've also never heard of anyone creating a backstory for their house... but I love it... & would expect nothing less from a glorious legend like Streisand...!!! ❤ ❤ ❤

I’ve been a devoted fan since the 1960s, but I read her book, and found it incongruous and overwhelming. A New England farmhouse on the Malibu beachfront? As her character said in The Way We Were, “the palm trees were transplanted here, and they look like they don’t belong.” And every piece of furniture, painting, tchotchke is so meticulously placed, I’d be terrified of spilling water on any of it. I’m glad she’s happy. I needed to take a statin.

@midnightmadness5307

Barbra has always been my idol since I was a young girl and fell in love with "the Way we Were'.....this is stunning, my favourite portion of the basement mall besides 'all of it' lol is indeed the Vintage Clothing, omg I would love to try a few of them on, I love Vintage!!!! Barbra's interior design and decorative talent is as outstanding as her One of a KIND voice, no one sings like her, no one. Not Celine....not anyone. xoxo

@chriscreekmore210
