Barbra Streisand has recorded more than 60 albums, almost all with Columbia Records. Her early works in the 1960s (her debut The Barbra Streisand Album which won two Grammy Awards in 1963, followed by The Second Barbra Streisand Album, The Third Album, My Name Is Barbra, etc.) are considered classic renditions of theater and nightclub standards, including her version of Happy Days Are Here Again. Beginning with My Name Is Barbra, her albums were often medley-filled keepsakes of her television specials.
Starting in 1969, Streisand tackled contemporary songwriters; like many talented singers of the day, she found herself a fish out of water in attempts to tackle rock, but her vocal talents prevailed and she gained newfound success with the pop and ballad-oriented Richard Perry-produced album Stoney End in 1971. The title track, written by Laura Nyro, was a big hit for Streisand.
Streisand's 1980 album, Guilty featured the songwriting, production and vocal talents of Barry Gibb and was the best-selling album of her recording career. During the 1970s, she was also highly prominent in the pop charts, with number-one records like The Way We Were, Evergreen, No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) (her duet with Donna Summer), and Woman In Love; some of these came from soundtracks of her films. She recently took part in supporting Haiti in singing "We are the World 25th anniversary.
When the 1970s ended, Streisand was named the most successful female singer in the U.S. - only Elvis Presley and The Beatles having sold more albums. [1]
[1] In 1982, New York Times music critic Stephen Holden wrote that Streisand was "the most influential mainstream American pop singer since Frank Sinatra."
I'm the Greatest Star
Barbra Streisand Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Sweet as pie, to tough as leather
And that's six expressions more
Than all them Barrymores put together
Instead of just kicking me
Why don't they give me a lift?
It must be a plot
Such a gift
Well, I'm miffed
'Cause I'm the greatest star
I am by far, but no one knows it
Wait, they're gonna hear a voice
A silver flute, oh, oh, oh, oh
They'll cheer each toot
Yay, she's terrific
When I expose it
Now, can't you see to look at me
That I'm a natural Camille?
As Camille I just feel
I've so much to offer
Kid, I know I'd be divine
Because I'm a natural cougher
Some ain't got it, not a lump
I'm a great big clump of talent
Laugh
They'll bend in half
Did you ever hear the story about the traveling salesman?
A thousand jokes
Stick around for the jokes
A thousand faces
I reiterate
When you're gifted
Then you're gifted
These are facts
I got no axe to grind
Hey, what are they, blind?
In all of the world so far
I'm the greatest star
Who is the pip with pizzazz?
Who is all ginger and jazz?
Who is as glamorous as?
Who's an American beauty rose
With an American beauty nose
And ten American beauty toes
Eyes on the target, and wham
One shot, one gun shot and bam!
Hey, Mr. Ziegfeld, here I am!
I'm the greatest star
I am by far
But no one knows it
That's why I was born
I'll blow my horn
'Til someone blows it
I'll light up like a light
Right up like a light
I'll flicker, then flare up
All the world's gonna stare up
Lookin' down, you'll never see me
Try the sky, 'cause that'll be me
I can make 'em cry
I can make 'em sigh
Someday they'll clamor for my drama
Have you guessed yet
Who's the best yet?
If you ain't, I'll tell you one more time
You bet your last dime
In all of the world so far
I'm the greatest, greatest star
