Barbra Streisand has recorded more than 60 albums, almost all with Columbia Records. Her early works in the 1960s (her debut The Barbra Streisand Album which won two Grammy Awards in 1963, followed by The Second Barbra Streisand Album, The Third Album, My Name Is Barbra, etc.) are considered classic renditions of theater and nightclub standards, including her version of Happy Days Are Here Again. Beginning with My Name Is Barbra, her albums were often medley-filled keepsakes of her television specials.
Starting in 1969, Streisand tackled contemporary songwriters; like many talented singers of the day, she found herself a fish out of water in attempts to tackle rock, but her vocal talents prevailed and she gained newfound success with the pop and ballad-oriented Richard Perry-produced album Stoney End in 1971. The title track, written by Laura Nyro, was a big hit for Streisand.
Streisand's 1980 album, Guilty featured the songwriting, production and vocal talents of Barry Gibb and was the best-selling album of her recording career. During the 1970s, she was also highly prominent in the pop charts, with number-one records like The Way We Were, Evergreen, No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) (her duet with Donna Summer), and Woman In Love; some of these came from soundtracks of her films. She recently took part in supporting Haiti in singing "We are the World 25th anniversary.
When the 1970s ended, Streisand was named the most successful female singer in the U.S. - only Elvis Presley and The Beatles having sold more albums. [1]
[1] In 1982, New York Times music critic Stephen Holden wrote that Streisand was "the most influential mainstream American pop singer since Frank Sinatra."
More In Love With You
Barbra Streisand Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Those past imperfect words that lovers say
I've danced through the dawn
Kissed and closed my eyes
Yet all to soon
Those sweet "hellos" became "good-byes"
Almost love, but never quite
Never seemed exactly right
Then I turned and you were there
You smiled and the world never was the same
I was in love before I even knew your name
Instantly I knew
All my life has led to you
And though the child in me was dazzled by your charms
A women was awakened in your arms
Who dreamed I could feel all the things I do
It seems all too wonderful... impossible and yet it's true
I feel I'm falling more in love with you
Each day I waken more in love with you.
In Barbra Streisand's song More In Love With You, she reminisces about her past relationships and how they were almost love, but never quite the real thing. She talks about how she's known the smiles that could melt her heart away and the words that lovers use to woo each other. She's danced through the dawn with her past lovers and has felt the closeness of a kiss, only to have it end too soon with sweet "hellos" becoming "good-byes." She admits that she's had many love affairs that never seemed exactly right.
But, then she turns and sees the right person in front of her. She says that when she sees him, the world never was the same. She knew instantly that all her life had led to him, even before she knew his name. She was dazzled by his charms and felt like a child, but at the same time, a woman was awakened in his arms. It all seems impossible, but it's true that she's falling more in love with him each day. Streisand's lyrics are optimistic as she talks about how she's finally found the one she's been searching for all her life.
The song is a classic love ballad, and the lyrics are so relatable because most people have been in similar situations where they've had relationships that were almost right but never quite there. Streisand's tender and emotional voice enhances the lyrics, and the song is a moving tribute to true love.
