Barbra Streisand has recorded more than 60 albums, almost all with Columbia Records. Her early works in the 1960s (her debut The Barbra Streisand Album which won two Grammy Awards in 1963, followed by The Second Barbra Streisand Album, The Third Album, My Name Is Barbra, etc.) are considered classic renditions of theater and nightclub standards, including her version of Happy Days Are Here Again. Beginning with My Name Is Barbra, her albums were often medley-filled keepsakes of her television specials.
Starting in 1969, Streisand tackled contemporary songwriters; like many talented singers of the day, she found herself a fish out of water in attempts to tackle rock, but her vocal talents prevailed and she gained newfound success with the pop and ballad-oriented Richard Perry-produced album Stoney End in 1971. The title track, written by Laura Nyro, was a big hit for Streisand.
Streisand's 1980 album, Guilty featured the songwriting, production and vocal talents of Barry Gibb and was the best-selling album of her recording career. During the 1970s, she was also highly prominent in the pop charts, with number-one records like The Way We Were, Evergreen, No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) (her duet with Donna Summer), and Woman In Love; some of these came from soundtracks of her films. She recently took part in supporting Haiti in singing "We are the World 25th anniversary.
When the 1970s ended, Streisand was named the most successful female singer in the U.S. - only Elvis Presley and The Beatles having sold more albums. [1]
[1] In 1982, New York Times music critic Stephen Holden wrote that Streisand was "the most influential mainstream American pop singer since Frank Sinatra."
Places That Belong To You
Barbra Streisand Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Days that hurried past
Dreams that should have lasted
Moments, hours
Slipping by as we
Told each other secrets
Somehow I'll never let go of the memories
Of how it was of what it was
What it was
All there was
Laughter, love songs
Footsteps that I hear
Make me think you're near me
Poems, pictures
Letters never mailed
Boats that never sailed
Remember that even though we can't be together
We're more for having loved one another
We shared the sky
We learned to fly
Someday when someone else?s arms are around us
When time has put some distance between us
The years will kindly show
How memories come and go
They ebb and flow like the tides
There are quiet places in my heart
Ever since we've parted
Gentle, tender
Traces of a song
Places that belong to you
The lyrics to Barbra Streisand's song "Places That Belong to You" evoke a sense of nostalgia and longing for moments and memories shared with a loved one. The singer reflects on the passage of time, with mornings, evenings, and days rushing past like fleeting dreams that should have lingered longer. The imagery of slipping moments and hours conveys a wistful regret for the brevity of shared secrets and cherished memories that seem to slip away all too quickly.
Throughout the song, there is a poignant sense of holding onto memories that seem to fade but are always ignited by moments that remind the singer of what once was. The lyrics speak to the enduring power of love and connection, as even in moments of separation, the memories of laughter, love songs, and shared experiences remain etched in the heart. The singer finds solace in the thought that the shared sky and the lessons learned together have allowed them to metaphorically fly, even in moments of distance.
The bittersweet reflections on missed opportunities and unrealized aspirations, such as poems, pictures, and letters never sent, add layers of complexity to the emotions expressed in the song. The imagery of boats that never sailed symbolizes the untapped potential and unfulfilled promises of the past, yet the singer finds comfort in the notion that their love and shared experiences have enriched their lives, even in absence. The recognition that they are “more for having loved one another” speaks to the transformative power of love and the enduring impact it leaves on the heart.
As the song progresses, the lyrics suggest a sense of acceptance and reconciliation with the passage of time and the inevitable changes that come with it. The singer contemplates a future where new arms may hold them, yet the memories and quiet places in the heart that belong to the loved one will always endure. The gentle and tender traces of a song serve as a melodic reminder of the shared moments and emotions that continue to resonate deeply within, showcasing the timeless connection that transcends physical separation. Ultimately, the lyrics encapsulate the enduring nature of love and the lasting impressions left by a beloved presence, symbolized by the bittersweet remnants of shared places that will forever belong to the other.
