Barbra Streisand has recorded more than 60 albums, almost all with Columbia Records. Her early works in the 1960s (her debut The Barbra Streisand Album which won two Grammy Awards in 1963, followed by The Second Barbra Streisand Album, The Third Album, My Name Is Barbra, etc.) are considered classic renditions of theater and nightclub standards, including her version of Happy Days Are Here Again. Beginning with My Name Is Barbra, her albums were often medley-filled keepsakes of her television specials.
Starting in 1969, Streisand tackled contemporary songwriters; like many talented singers of the day, she found herself a fish out of water in attempts to tackle rock, but her vocal talents prevailed and she gained newfound success with the pop and ballad-oriented Richard Perry-produced album Stoney End in 1971. The title track, written by Laura Nyro, was a big hit for Streisand.
Streisand's 1980 album, Guilty featured the songwriting, production and vocal talents of Barry Gibb and was the best-selling album of her recording career. During the 1970s, she was also highly prominent in the pop charts, with number-one records like The Way We Were, Evergreen, No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) (her duet with Donna Summer), and Woman In Love; some of these came from soundtracks of her films. She recently took part in supporting Haiti in singing "We are the World 25th anniversary.
When the 1970s ended, Streisand was named the most successful female singer in the U.S. - only Elvis Presley and The Beatles having sold more albums. [1]
[1] In 1982, New York Times music critic Stephen Holden wrote that Streisand was "the most influential mainstream American pop singer since Frank Sinatra."
Solitary Moon
Barbra Streisand Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Is wrapped around us
And the dawn might come too soon
When the only light
That's found us
Is the solitary moon
When the songbird in the willow
Once again
You share my pillow
Making love to me
Tenderly
Here, as we share
The silent moon
As it slowly sails above us
In it's solitary flight
Seems the moon
Must surely love us
As it bathes us in it's light
Say that we can spent the day
Through a sunlit afternoon
Let your kisses say
You'll stay here
And make love to me
Tenderly
Here, as we share
The silent moon.
Say that we can spent the day here
Through a sunlit afternoon
Let your kisses say
You'll stay here
And make love to me
Tenderly
Here, as we share
The silent moon
The solitary moon
Tender loving moon
The sedentary moon
In Barbra Streisand’s song Solitary Moon, the lyrics describe the intimacy and passion shared between two lovers underneath the moonlight. The moon is a recurring theme throughout the song, almost personified and offering its light and glow as a witness to the couple’s romantic encounter. The lyrics suggest the endearing nature of their time together, as the lovers remain wrapped in each other's arms, with only the moonlight and sounds of nature to accompany them.
The song also explores the theme of time and its fleeting nature, with the dawn looming on the horizon and the night slowly coming to an end. The verses suggest an attempt to make the most of the moment, even if they must part ways when the sun rises. While the night may seem long, the dawn always threatens to come too soon, hence the couple’s desire to make the most of their time together.
Overall, the lyrics depict a sentimental and romantic encounter, with the moon and nature serving as the setting and witnesses to the lovers’ passionate embrace.
