Barbra Streisand has recorded more than 60 albums, almost all with Columbia Records. Her early works in the 1960s (her debut The Barbra Streisand Album which won two Grammy Awards in 1963, followed by The Second Barbra Streisand Album, The Third Album, My Name Is Barbra, etc.) are considered classic renditions of theater and nightclub standards, including her version of Happy Days Are Here Again. Beginning with My Name Is Barbra, her albums were often medley-filled keepsakes of her television specials.
Starting in 1969, Streisand tackled contemporary songwriters; like many talented singers of the day, she found herself a fish out of water in attempts to tackle rock, but her vocal talents prevailed and she gained newfound success with the pop and ballad-oriented Richard Perry-produced album Stoney End in 1971. The title track, written by Laura Nyro, was a big hit for Streisand.
Streisand's 1980 album, Guilty featured the songwriting, production and vocal talents of Barry Gibb and was the best-selling album of her recording career. During the 1970s, she was also highly prominent in the pop charts, with number-one records like The Way We Were, Evergreen, No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) (her duet with Donna Summer), and Woman In Love; some of these came from soundtracks of her films. She recently took part in supporting Haiti in singing "We are the World 25th anniversary.
When the 1970s ended, Streisand was named the most successful female singer in the U.S. - only Elvis Presley and The Beatles having sold more albums. [1]
[1] In 1982, New York Times music critic Stephen Holden wrote that Streisand was "the most influential mainstream American pop singer since Frank Sinatra."

Each word can tear you apart
I sing you sing along
You find your life in my song
When you need the strength to carry on
You've got me to turn to
With the songs that I sing
They've helped you be strong now
The song sets you free
But who sings for me
I'm all alone now
Who sings for songbird
Sometimes when I'm all alone
I sing my saddest song
Lonely and no one can see
This time the song is for me
I can touch your secret place inside
And still you don't know me
With the songs that I sing
And the magic they bring
You've learned to be strong now
My song sets you free
But who sings for me
I'm all alone now
Where is my songbird
Where is my songbird
Who sings his songs for me
Songbird by Barbra Streisand is a song that evokes strong emotions for both the singer and listener. The lyrics are written in such a way as to suggest that the singer is a "songbird" who is singing to her audience from the depths of her heart. When she sings, she pours out her soul and gives her audience a glimpse into her most private thoughts and emotions. This is highlighted when she sings "Sometimes when I'm all alone, I sing my saddest song. Lonely and no one can see, this time the song is for me."
The song is about the power of music to heal and provide comfort. The songbird sings to give strength to those who need it the most. However, there is a sense of loneliness and isolation that permeates the lyrics. The songbird wonders who sings for her, who provides comfort and strength when she needs it the most. Despite her gift for singing, she too can feel isolated and alone, left to sing to the silence. The line "Who sings his songs for me, where is my songbird?" speaks volumes to this sense of isolation and the desire for someone who can provide the same comfort that she provides for others through her music.
