Barbra Streisand has recorded more than 60 albums, almost all with Columbia Records. Her early works in the 1960s (her debut The Barbra Streisand Album which won two Grammy Awards in 1963, followed by The Second Barbra Streisand Album, The Third Album, My Name Is Barbra, etc.) are considered classic renditions of theater and nightclub standards, including her version of Happy Days Are Here Again. Beginning with My Name Is Barbra, her albums were often medley-filled keepsakes of her television specials.
Starting in 1969, Streisand tackled contemporary songwriters; like many talented singers of the day, she found herself a fish out of water in attempts to tackle rock, but her vocal talents prevailed and she gained newfound success with the pop and ballad-oriented Richard Perry-produced album Stoney End in 1971. The title track, written by Laura Nyro, was a big hit for Streisand.
Streisand's 1980 album, Guilty featured the songwriting, production and vocal talents of Barry Gibb and was the best-selling album of her recording career. During the 1970s, she was also highly prominent in the pop charts, with number-one records like The Way We Were, Evergreen, No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) (her duet with Donna Summer), and Woman In Love; some of these came from soundtracks of her films. She recently took part in supporting Haiti in singing "We are the World 25th anniversary.
When the 1970s ended, Streisand was named the most successful female singer in the U.S. - only Elvis Presley and The Beatles having sold more albums. [1]
[1] In 1982, New York Times music critic Stephen Holden wrote that Streisand was "the most influential mainstream American pop singer since Frank Sinatra."

Are you ready to hear your lesson for the day?
-yes, teacher! yes, teacher!
Are you ready to learn what history has to say?
-yes, teacher! yes, teacher!
Then take your books and follow me to 1776 ad
And as the history page is turned we will see what we can learn
In 1776 tom paine was writing books with a might and main
The tory said "now man alive"
Stop giving out with this here liberty jive
-stop giving out with this here liberty jive
Don't sing of people's rights that way
They might believe in what you say
So stop your song it's not polite
Pipe down before you start a fight
-you don't say, teacher, is that right?
Aha, but tom paine looked ahead
And to those tories thomas said no, no, no, no
When you got to go, you got to go
You can't stand still on freedom's track
If you don't go forward, you go back
You can't giddyup by saying whoa
And sitting on your status quo
-yes, teacher! yes, teacher! yes, teacher! yes, teacher!
To washington at valley forge
A wise guy whispered slow down, george
Why start up trouble for the king
This freedom racket is a corny thing
-this freedom racket is a corny thing
Your troops are ickys they can't move
You'll never get them in the groove
So if you're wise, you'll just lay low
And play with the guys that have the dough
-you don't say teacher, is that so?
Aha, but george just looked ahead
And to that tory georgie said...no...no, no, no
When you got to go, you got to go
You can't stand still on freedom's track
If you don't go forward, you go back
You can't giddyup by saying whoa
And sitting on your status quo
-yes, teacher! yes, teacher!
Now paul revere saw a bellfry light
And that boy rode to town one night
Sang to the farmers near and far
Here come the british beating eight to the bar
One slippery tory said now paul
You're manners aren't nice at all
Turn back, don't be an old hep cat
The right people don't sing like that
-butpaul revere turn him down flat
Aha, that's right, he rode ahead
And to that tory paul just said, no, no, no, no
When you got to go, you got to go
You can't stand still on freedom's track
If you don't go forward, you go back
You can't giddyup by saying whoa
And sitting on your status quo
Yes, teacher! yes, teacher! yes, teacher
So, students now you're hep, don't stop!
Keep stepping to that freedom hop
Although the tory's beef and blow
To keep you sitting on your status quo
-to keep you sitting on your status quo
When they say let's stand still a bit
Give up some rights, no harm in it
Remember those are just the tricks
That did not work in 76
-now ain't that right, the same old tricks?
Though torys talk: don't be misled
And do what all those others said
No, no, no, no
When you got to go, you got to go
You can't stand still on freedom's track
If you don't go forward, you go back
You can't giddyup by saying whoa
And sitting on your status ...
Sitting on, yes, sittin' on your, status...
Quo!
Oh!
The lyrics of Barbra Streisand's song "Status Quo" are a playful and educational exploration of historical figures and their resistance against the status quo during the American Revolution. The song uses a classroom setting with a teacher and eager students, creating a dialogue that emphasizes the importance of pushing for change and not conforming to outdated norms.
The first verse introduces the lesson, with the students eagerly responding to the teacher's questions. The teacher then takes them back to the year 1776 and introduces Thomas Paine, an influential figure who wrote books advocating for liberty and people's rights. The tories, who were loyal to the British crown, criticize Paine's ideas and ask him to stop advocating for freedom. Paine, however, refuses to back down and insists that progress cannot be made if they stay stagnant and conform to the status quo.
In the next verse, the scene shifts to General George Washington at Valley Forge. He is advised by someone to stop causing trouble for the king and to abandon the idea of freedom because it is seen as unimportant. Washington is encouraged to align himself with those who have wealth and power. However, Washington rejects this advice and asserts that sticking to the status quo will not lead to progress. He understands that moving forward and fighting for freedom is the only way to bring about change.
The final verse focuses on Paul Revere's famous midnight ride to warn the farmers about the approaching British troops. Despite criticism from a tory, Revere is unyielding in his determination to spread the message and rally the people. Just like Paine and Washington, Revere recognizes the necessity of action and refuses to conform to the established order.
The overall message of the song is to encourage listeners to challenge the status quo and promote progress. It celebrates the courage and determination of historical figures who defied norms, fought for liberty, and embraced change. Streisand urges the students, or the listeners, to keep stepping forward toward freedom and not be swayed by those who try to maintain the status quo through tricks and deception. The repeated chorus emphasizes the importance of not standing still and speaking out against injustice. It serves as a rallying call to continuously push for a better future rather than settling for the way things are.
