The Man That Got Away
Barbra Streisand Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The night is bitter
The stars have lost their glitter
The winds grow colder
Suddenly you're older
And all because of the man that got away...
No more his eager call,
The writing's on the wall
The dreams you've dreamed have all gone astray
The man that won you, has run off and undone you
That great beginning, has seen the final inning
Don't know what happened, it's all a crazy game...
No more that old time thrill
For you've been through the mill
And never a new love will be the same
Good riddance, good-bye
Every trick of his, you're on to
But fools will be fools
And where's he gone to?
The road gets rougher
It's lonelier and tougher
With hope you burn up
Tomorrow he may turn up
There's just no let up
But live lone night and day
Ever since this world began
There is nothing sadder than
A one man woman looking for the man
That got away...
The man that got away...

Overall Meaning

In the song "The Man That Got Away," Barbra Streisand sings about a woman who has lost her lover and is struggling to move on. The lyrics describe her sadness and bitterness towards the situation, as well as the realization that she must go on living despite the pain. The words "The night is bitter, the stars have lost their glitter" set a melancholy tone and convey the sense of loss that the woman feels. She is reminded of her age and the passing of time, which makes her feel even more alone. The lyrics also hint at the idea of the man being a player or a trickster, with lines such as "Every trick of his, you're on to" and "Fools will be fools." The repeated line "The man that got away" emphasizes the woman's feelings of regret and longing for what she has lost.

The song's message is one of resilience and acceptance. Although the woman is heartbroken, she acknowledges that life goes on and that she must carry on despite the pain. She realizes that she cannot rely on anyone else for her happiness and must learn to appreciate herself, flaws and all. The lyric "There is nothing sadder than a one-man woman looking for the man that got away" suggests that it is important to move on from a lost love and not to dwell on it.

Hard to follow Judy Garland. But Streisand did the song justice.

She should have mentioned Judy by name.

Garland and Streisand are endlessly compared but their voices are very different and yet they blend perfectly. Their duets were electric. Garland was so vulnerable and Streisand seems to be a force of nature. One thing they had in common, they greatly admired each other and never missed an opportunity to praise each other. Also, they both pair their gold-standard voices with A-list acting skill when delivering a song. They both play a different, specific character for every song... they never just sing. Their likes will not be seen again. There is really no point in trying to sort out if one was better than the other. Any preference is just a matter of personal taste. Both represent the absolute peak of talent and are both, for all intents and purposes, perfect vocalists.

Very nice! Thank you.

She has such a powerful voice, and yet you don’t feel the resignation to pain like when Judy sang it. I wonder if it is just because Judy’s life was so much more troubled and painful than Barbara’s and so Judy’s feelings were always so palpable.

larrydirtybird When Judy sang she not only gave the lyrics an emotional edge, but also conveyed a narrative that the audience could identify with. It was an emotional journey that wasn’t just witnessed but one felt included; touched by it. Whilst I acknowledge Streisand’s prowess as a singer I never feel touched in the same way.

I love her take on that song!! One of my favorites. Always loved Judy Garland's version, but Babs knocked it out of the park!!!
