Poor Boy Blues
Barclay James Harvest Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All the nights that I've missed you
All the nights without end
All the times that I've called you
Only needing a friend

Now your eyes shine with beauty
That I missed long ago
Guess the truth is I love you
I can't say any more

'Cause I need you
Yes, I want you
Yes, I love you

As I look from my window
To the streets where you stand
I am gazing through dark glass
We can't walk hand in hand

Though your friends try to tell me
Though your friends you defend
They keep my heart from your heart
We must be in the end

'Cause I love you
Yes, I need you
Yes, I love you, love you

All the nights that I've missed you
All the nights without end
All the times that I've called you
Only needing a friend

Now your eyes shine with beauty
That I missed long ago
Guess the truth is I love you
I can't say any more

'Cause I need you
Yes, I want you
Yes, I love you, love you

'Cause I need you

Yes, I want you
Yes, I love you, love you, love you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Barclay James Harvest's song "Poor Man's Moody Blues" express the singer's deep longing and love for someone who they have missed and called out to without response. The first verse suggests a sense of isolation and desperation for connection, as the singer confesses to only needing a friend. The second verse invokes a romantic love, as the singer describes the beauty of the person they love and the pain of being unable to hold their hand or be with them. The repetition of "Yes, I need you, yes, I want you, yes, I love you" in the chorus further emphasizes the singer's overwhelming desire and love for the person they are singing to.

The song's exploration of love and loss highlights the universal human experience of longing for connection and companionship. The title, "Poor Man's Moody Blues", also speaks to the band's own struggles with being labeled as a poor man's version of other, more successful bands. The song's melancholic melody and introspective lyrics create a sense of emotional depth and honesty that resonate with listeners. Overall, "Poor Man's Moody Blues" is a powerful portrayal of the complexities of love and desire.

Bought the album back in 70's when proper music was written and it's still one of the greatest albums ever recorded. This trio of tracks was occasionally played on Radio Caroline and the emotion in the music hit me straight between the ears and still does the business nearly 40 years later. This band should be up there with the greats.

This is still in STL's KSHE 95 rotation. That makes me happy.

Never tire of this great trilogy.  One of the great bands of the 70's.

Saw this band on OGWT as a young boy and fell in love with their music and their message. Respect.

Probably my favourite BJH track(s). The last part - For No 1 - is so moving both in music and lyrics.
