Rivers of Babylon
Barefoot Truth Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

By the rivers of babylon,
there we sat down
Ye-eah we wept, when we remembered zion.
By the rivers of babylon, there we sat down
Ye-eah we wept, when we remembered zion.

When the wicked
Carried us away in captivity
Required from us a song
Now how shall we sing the lord's song in a strange land

When the wicked
Carried us away in captivity
Requiering of us a song
Now how shall we sing the lord's song in a strange land

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah let the words of our mouth and the meditations of our heart
Be acceptable in thy sight here tonight

Let the words of our mouth and the meditation of our hearts
Be acceptable in thy sight here tonight

By the rivers of babylon, there we sat down
Ye-eah we wept, when we remembered zion.

By the rivers of babylon, there we sat down
Ye-eah we wept, when we remembered zion.

By the rivers of babylon (dark tears of babylon)
There we sat down (you got to sing a song)
Ye-eah we wept, (sing a song of love)
When we remember zion. (yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah)

By the rivers of babylon (rough bits of babylon)
There we sat down (you hear the people cry)
Ye-eah we wept, (they need their god)
When we remember zion. (ooh, have the power)

By the rivers of babylon, there we sat down
Ye-eah we wept, when we remembered zion.

Overall Meaning

"Babylon" was the capital of the ancient empire of Babylonia, a powerful city-state in Mesopotamia, which rose to prominence in the 18th century B.C. The rivers mentioned in the song are the Tigris and Euphrates, which flowed through Babylon. In the Jewish faith, Babylon was seen as the symbol of exile and oppression, and the lyrics reflect this sentiment.

The first repetition of the chorus signifies the despair of the people of Judah who had been taken captive by the Babylonians. The exiled Jews longed to return to their homeland, which the lyrics symbolize as "Zion." The second repetition of the chorus reflects their desperation even more strongly, as they are unable to sing the songs of their God in a strange land.

The song then transforms into a prayer, asking that the words they speak and the thoughts they have may be pleasing to God. The final repetition of the chorus brings the song back to the initial sorrow of being exiled, and the pain of remembering their lost land.
