Hanukkah Blessings
Barenaked Ladies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How Lucky are we that we have lights so that we can see
Although the day is done
What a miracle that a spark lifts these candles out of the dark
Every evening, one by one
Until the end of Hanukkah, of Hanukkah

With the jingle bells and the toys
And the TV shows and the noise
It's easy to forget
At the end of the day
Our whole family will say
These words for Hanukkah

Barukh Atah
Adonai, Eloheinu
Melekh h'olam
Asher kid'shanu
B'mitz'votav v'tzivanu
L'hadlik nehr shel Hanukkah

We light the candles for Hanukkah, for Hanukkah
We remember how Maccabees
Fought so all of us could be free
And so we celebrate
On this festival of the lights
There's a joyful time every night
Where we illuminate
The candles of Hanukkah, of Hanukkah

Barukh Atah adonai
Eloheinu Melekh h'olam
She'asah neesim l'avotaynu
bayamim hahem ba'zman hazeh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Barenaked Ladies' "Hanukkah Blessings" song are a celebration of Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights. The first two lines express gratitude for the lights that enable people to see, even after the day has ended. The song praises the miracle of light, with a spark lifting candles from the darkness. The holiday is celebrated every evening, with one candle being lit every day until the end of Hanukkah. The chorus urges listeners to light candles for Hanukkah and remember the brave Maccabees who fought for Jewish freedom.

The song is a reminder that amidst the commercialization and noise of the holiday season, it's important not to forget the significance of Hanukkah, a time to celebrate Jewish identity, history, and tradition. The lyrics also contain a Hebrew blessing, "Baruch atah Adonai, eloheinu Melech ha'olam Asher kid'shanu, b'mitz'votav v'tzivanu l'hadlik ner shel Hanukkah" which translates to "Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of all, who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to kindle the Hanukkah lights." The song is a joyous tribute to Hanukkah's traditions, while also reflecting on its deeper spiritual significance.

This is such a great album. Every single song. I especially love that they brought in fellow Canadian singers Sarah McLachlan and Michael BublΓ©. Sarah's voice on "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings"Β’ is absolutely gorgeous.

I love that they included some Hanukkah songs as a couple of the members of the band are Jewish and surely millions of their fans.

Sarah Palmer

I love this Hanukah song so much! It’s literally the best one I’ve ever heard!

Leaving a Chinese take out restaurant in Southold,NY, I heard this song, as the sun was setting, on WLNG radio on the first night of Hanukah. This is how I celebrated Hanukah this year at age 70- by chance catching this song which I had never heard before, on the radio. This was my Hanukah celebration, it's so easy for me to forget after years of estrangement and bitter disappointment. But the song made it for me this year. Thanks!
