E uma das formações dessa leva que vem merecendo aplausos é a turma do Barfly, formada por Carlos Alexandre Aidar e Silva (guitarra), Giovanni Ribeiro (teclado), Cláudio Ribeiro (guitarra), Nilo Faria (baixo) e Marcelo Guzzo (bateria), criada em 2002 e que após participar de festivais como o Bananada e o Goiânia Noise Festival, chegou a colocar na praça um ano após sua fundação o ótimo EP Days Should Make You Smilecom (pela Monstro Discos), que das sete músicas, se destacavam Thoughts I Had in Mind (cujo clipe foi executado na MTV) e Down, fortemente influenciadas pelo rock britânico, gente das antigas como The Cure, e artistas mais recentes como Travis, Teenage Fanclub, Weezer, Radiohead, Manic Street Preachers e o trovador já falecido Elliot Smith. Tudo puxado por melodias ganchudas cantadas em inglês.

Com as portas abertas pela ótima recepção desse trabalho, era a hora de produzir um álbum completo, e The Longest Turn chegou ao mercado esse ano, lançado pela mesma gravadora e lapidando as influências da obra anterior. Com produção de Iuri Freiberger (MQN, Violins, Irmãos Rocha!), o CD começa com dois ótimos pop-rocks. Daylight e Disturbing Sun são canções com boas guitarras, fortes melodias apresentadas por vocais contidos e que mostram um forte quê de Teenage e Maniac Street Preachers. Em seguida, vem a quase valsa beatle On Fall, deliciosa, que remete um pouco ao Oasis e chama para dançar e cantar junto. Aliás, os rapazes realmente sabem fazer melodias que grudem aos ouvidos e não deixem nada a desejar para o pessoal de fora. Someone Like You é a primeira balada, guiada por guitarra tranqüila; até ganhar companhia da bateria e baixo a partir do meio da música. She Holds é beeem Teenage e Anything Bur Stars é aceleradinha, com acento country, e abre o leque de tendências sonoras do grupo, que se sai bem em todas elas.

Ainda há as boas Hands Up (outro pop-rock bem feito) e Lost (com bateria quebrada, bom dedilhado, vocal quase sussurrado, e teclado que deixa o arranjo psicodélico). The Next One é a mais rock das doze, e nessa o vocal passeia por Noel Gallagher e John Lennon; já Fairground não deixa de ser bacana, mas repete um pouco a idéia musical de faixas anteriores. Encerrando, Fear começa com instrumental intimista e psicodélico, até se transformar em rock and roll rápido, urgente e bem executado; e Worlds And Ashtray mantém a linha do pop escocês perpretado por Travis e Belle And Sebastian.
Não fossem as letras em inglês, o Barfly teria tudo para aparecer nas programações das FMs tupiniquins. Mas ao fazerem o som que desejam, da maneira como querem, o quinteto mostra estar pouco se lixando para o lado comercial. Caso tivessem nascido na terra da rainha, provavelmente eles já teriam aparecido em um dos New Musical Express(s) da vida. The Longest Turn não é uma obra completamente original e que deixa clara suas referências. Porém, perto do que tem sido feito por aí, merece ser conferida; e com mais experiência e burilando suas idéias sonoras, o Barfly tem tudo para se tornar um dos expoentes dessa nova geração roqueira independente nacional. E quem sabe, chegando aos ouvidos de um crítico inglês, eles consigam projeção fora do país e mostrem que no Brasil, tem gente tão ou mais talentosa do que as essas bandinhas do hype que pintam volta e meia no universo pop."
