Do Your Ears Hang Low?
Barney Lyrics

Do they travel to and fro
Can you tie them in knot
Can you tie them in a bow
Can you throw them over you shoulder
Like a continental soldier
Do your ears hang low?
This song, commonly associated with children's entertainment and often sung by Barney and other similar characters, is a playful and lighthearted piece which looks at the physical attributes of a person's ears. The first line, "do your ears hang low," is a rhetorical question which implies that the listener has very low-hanging or prominent ears. The following line, "do they travel to and fro," suggests that these ears are in constant motion and may even dangle as the person walks or moves.
The next two lines ask a silly question which highlights the elasticity of the ears, inquiring whether the listener can tie them in knots or bows. Following this, the song references a more serious topic, stating "can you throw them over your shoulder like a continental soldier?" This is a reference to the military practice of carrying a rifle over one's shoulder, but in this instance, the ears are being substituted for the rifle. Lastly, the question is repeated once more, bringing the song to its conclusion.
