Blue Lightning
Bars of Gold Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There are beasts and there are swallows.
We got knuckles on the door.
There are zombies here among us
Carrying important conversation.
If you're building up a brick wall, ohhhh
Well your brick wall has been built.
You got issues, you got problems
You got family, you got friends.

But what about emotion?
The cars always running.
The kids in the parking lot
Drinking and smoking.

In the biggest part of cities,
On a dark and country road
On a night that you had planned
Better put your family in the basement.
When I get up early.
Way too early to have evening
If there's colour on your collar
Gotta be demons in the basement.

But what about emotion?
The cars always running
The kids in the parking lot
Drinking and smoking.

But what about emotion?
The cars always running
The kids in the parking lot
Drinking and smoking

This is for the people who wait round Christmas.

Yeah they get it on, yeah they get it on Christmas.
Yeah they get it on Christmas.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Blue Lightning" by Bars of Gold paint a vivid picture of a dark and chaotic world filled with unpredictable creatures, human struggles, and societal tensions. The opening lines introduce the contrasting imagery of beasts and swallows, symbolizing the presence of both danger and vulnerability. The "knuckles on the door" imply a sense of impending threat or confrontation.

The mention of zombies among us signifies a loss of individuality and meaningful communication within society. These zombies, instead of engaging in meaningful conversations, are merely carrying out "important" but empty exchanges. This can be seen as a critique on the superficiality and lack of emotional depth in interpersonal interactions.

The lyrics shift focus to the idea of building walls, both literally and metaphorically. While one might think they have successfully built a barrier to protect themselves from the outside world, the reality is that their inner struggles, issues, and relationships still exist. The mention of family and friends suggests that even amidst personal challenges, we are not alone, highlighting the importance of emotional support.

The song then delves into a contrasting scene - the bustling city and the dark country road. These locations symbolize polarities in life - the chaos and distractions of city life versus the solitude and potential danger of the countryside. The mention of putting family in the basement as a precaution implies a need for protection from the unknown and the potential threats that lurk in the shadows.

The repeated line "what about emotion?" suggests a yearning for genuine connection and emotional engagement. It questions the prioritization of external factors and material pursuits over meaningful human experiences. The mention of cars always running and the youth in the parking lot drinking and smoking depict a scene of restless and aimless existence, a search for fulfillment and escape from the monotony of everyday life.

The final lines introduce a touching sentiment, acknowledging those who patiently wait for Christmas and find joy in its arrival. It portrays a sense of hope and celebration amidst the chaotic world described earlier, emphasizing the importance of finding joy and connection even in difficult times.

Overall, "Blue Lightning" reflects on the complexities of human existence, the need for emotional connection, and the contrasting elements that shape our lives.

I finally saw BöG again at PJ's, and I'm here to say that they are the finest band in the land. Their style is original: they don't sound like all the other ordinary bands out there. They are superb musicians. I've been around for a long time, and I would rank BöG as one of the greatest live bands of all time.
The only bands which I might possibly say were better than BöG were
1. The MC5, but only during the brief period after they released High Time and before they became junkies.
2. Blue Öyster Cult in the period when they recorded and released _On Your Feet or On Your Knees_.
3. The Pretty Things when they released _Parachute_.
But all that refers to bands from a long time ago, so it's difficult to make an accurate comparison. What is certain is that here and now, they are the best rock band now performing. And here I compare them as being better than these bands I've seen in the past year:
1. Foals
2. Metric
3. Sam Roberts Band
Everybody else is just ordinary and not very sophisticated -- kids' bands.

Idk why this band isn't so much more popular. Fucking amazing music. Marc Paffi is a goddamn musical genius. The rest of the band plays their part perfectly. "Wheels" is easily the best album from 2013. Completely underrated. This is the kind of music that 10 years later people find out about and lose their shit. SO MUCH LOVE

Eons I slept

+DIY or DIE Yeah, I really don't get it. It's not like Bear vs. Shark was a huge success either. But "X" popstar of the month goes triple platinum. Strange world, man.
