Divide
Bastille Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Roll the window down, let the air blow 'round you
A sadness in the breeze as the night divides us

In these darker days, I push the limit to the love you offer
There's a riot in my head, demanding we do this forever

Why would we divide when we could come together?
Just bodies that collide, lost and found each other
So don't, don't leave me alone
Don't leave me alone, don't leave me alone
Why would we divide when we could come together?

Looking back around, glamorize the chaos
Don't let summer nights destroy everything before us

In these darker days, I push the limits to the love you offer
There's a riot in my head, demanding we do this forever

Why would we divide when we could come together?
Just bodies that collide, lost and found each other
So don't, don't leave me alone
Don't leave me alone, don't leave me alone
Why would we divide when we could come together?

So roll the window down, won't let you go like this
Go like this, go like this
Roll the window down, won't let you go like this
Go like this, go like this

Why would we divide when we could come together?
Are we just bodies that collide, lost and found each other
So don't, don't leave me alone
Don't leave me alone, don't leave me alone
Why would we divide when we could come together?

Roll the window down, won't let you go like this
Go like this, go like this

Roll the window down, won't let you go like this
Go like this, go like this

Overall Meaning

In Bastille's song "Divide", the lyrics express a feeling of sadness and separation between two lovers. The singer implores his partner not to leave him alone, asking why they would divide when they could come together. In the face of chaos and uncertainty, the singer wants to hold onto the connection between them and not let go.

The lyrics reflect a struggle with anxiety and fear of loss, as the singer confesses that there is a riot in his head, and he pushes the limits of the love that is offered to him. The window is rolled down, allowing the breeze to blow around them, and the lyrics suggest that this simple act of opening up to the sensations of the world can help them to feel more alive and connected.

The repetition of the refrain "Why would we divide when we could come together?" emphasizes the theme of unity and the idea that the two lovers can find a way to overcome the obstacles that keep them apart. Despite the challenges that they face, the singer wants to hold onto the hope that they can stay together and remain close.

I love the cracks in his voice, the vulnerability adds another layer to this song. So beautiful💙

@Ursorion

If I remember this fact well, somebody said that they had met Dan like 5 years ago and he had played it for them, long time ago before Doom Days came out, which is obvious. This song was made in the Bad Blood era, that's why it kinda sounds like pre-Bastille Dan, I mean...Dan Smith's solo songs equal him and his piano, so does this song.

@vallynn78

Explains why his newest album has a more pop feel. This is up there for me like Icarus is.

@maya-ez3wc

One of my favourites from the album so far, Dan’s voice is just perfectly raw and beautiful in this ❤️❤️
