Adagio For Strings
Bastille feat. Maiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What is love?
Baby, don′t hurt me
Don't hurt me, no more
What is love?
Baby don′t hurt me
Don't hurt me, no more

I don't know why you′re not there
I give you my love but you don′t care
So what is right and what is wrong?
Give me a sign

What is love?
Baby, don't hurt me
Don′t hurt me, no more
What is love?
Baby, don't hurt me
Don′t hurt me, no more
What is love?

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, uh, uh
What is love?
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, uh, uh
(What is love?)

Oh, I don't know, what can I do?
What else can I say? It′s up to you
I know we're one, just me and you
I can't go on

What is love?
Baby, don′t hurt me
Don′t hurt me, no more
What is love?
Baby, don't hurt me
Don′t hurt me, no more
What is love?
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, uh, uh
What is love?
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, uh, uh

What is love?
What is love?
What is love?
Baby, don't hurt me
Don′t hurt me, no more
Baby, don't hurt me
Don′t hurt me, no more

(We found love in a hopeless place)
Baby, don't hurt me
(We found love in a hopeless place)
Don't hurt me, no more
(We found love in a hopeless place)
Baby, don′t hurt me
(We found love in a hopeless place)
Don′t hurt me, no more

Now that we found love what are we gonna do with it?
Now that we found love what are we gonna do?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bastille feat. Maiday's song "Adagio For Strings" are actually a sample from the song "What Is Love" by Haddaway. The lyrics talk about the confusion and pain caused by love and the desire for a sign or answer to what is right and wrong. The chorus repeats the question "What is love?" and pleads for the other person to not hurt them anymore.

The song seems to be expressing the frustration that comes with being in a relationship where one person seems to be indifferent or inconsiderate of the other's feelings. The line "I give you my love but you don't care" shows the imbalance and possibly even the one-sided nature of the relationship. The repetition of the question "What is love?" suggests that the singer is questioning the very concept of love.

Despite the confusion and hurt expressed throughout the song, there is still a glimmer of hope in lines such as "Now that we found love what are we gonna do with it?" It suggests that even in difficult times, love can still be found and cherished.

I love how Bastille's music reflects Dan's great taste in movies/TV. On the two Other People's Heartache albums they've referenced/sampled Platoon, Requiem for a Dream, The Breakfast Club, American Beauty, Psycho, Full Metal Jacket, The Graduate, Donnie Darko, Mulholland Drive, Twin Peaks and probably others I haven't noticed.
Knowing Dan's obsession with Lynch, the Bad Blood cover is probably a reference to Lost Highway.
