I'm Only Sleeping
Bathory Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I wake up early in the morning
Lift my head, I'm still yawning
When I'm in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float up stream (Float up stream)

Please, don't wake me, no, don't shake me
Leave me where I am, I'm only sleeping
Everybody seems to think I'm lazy
I don't mind, I think they're crazy
Running everywhere at such a speed
Till they find there's no need (There's no need)

Please, don't spoil my day, I'm miles away
And after all I'm only sleeping

Keeping an eye on the world going by my window
Taking my time

Lying there and staring at the ceiling
Waiting for a sleepy feeling

Please, don't spoil my day, I'm miles away
And after all I'm only sleeping

Ooh yeah

Keeping an eye on the world going by my window
Taking my time

When I wake up early in the morning
Lift my head, I'm still yawning
When I'm in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float up stream (Float up stream)

Please, don't wake me, no, don't shake me
Leave me where I am, I'm only sleeping

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bathory's song "I'm Only Sleeping" convey a sense of laziness, escapism, and disconnection from the world. The song begins with the singer describing waking up in the morning and still feeling sleepy and dreamy, not yet ready to fully join the waking world. They choose to linger in bed, letting their thoughts drift like a stream.

The lyrics express a desire to be left alone and not disturbed, as the singer values the peace and calmness of being in their own state of relaxation. They find contentment in their laziness, while others view it as a flaw or lacking ambition. The singer sees the frantic pace and constant busyness of others as unnecessary and even crazy. They prefer observing the world passing by their window, taking their time and embracing a slower rhythm of life.

The song captures the idea of finding solace in solitude and daydreaming, using sleep as a symbol for escaping the demands and expectations of society. The singer seems to cherish the moments of being disconnected from the world, allowing themselves to fully immerse in their own thoughts and desires without interruption.

Overall, "I'm Only Sleeping" portrays a desire to retreat from the external pressures of life, reveling in the comfort of one's own thoughts and dreams. It encourages listeners to appreciate the value of stillness and contemplation, rather than constantly being caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday existence.

I never thought I'd say this about the godfather of black metal, but this is quite charming. He's such an underrated genius. I miss him.

Quorthon had top tier Beatles taste. This has always been one of my favourite Beatles songs, thought it was hugely underrated. Such a shame that we lost him when we did. Bathory had so much more in it. Still, we'll always have Under the Sign of a Black Mark, Blood Fire Death and Hammerheart. In my opinion, Bathory was the first true black metal band and certainly one of the best.

Quorthon was a genius. Way ahead of his time. He started up the whole black metal scene the viking metal scene and then comes out with this work of art? Probably the Beatles best song imo. He trolled the media and lied his way to death. The man was a pure troll and a absolute legend
