You Raise Me Up
Bazil Meade Lyrics

When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary
When troubles come and my heart burdened be
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence
Until you come and sit awhile with me

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up, to more than I can be

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up, to more than I can be

There is no life no life without its hunger
Each restless heart beats so imperfectly
But when you come and I am filled with wonder
Sometimes, I think I glimpse eternity

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
And I am strong, when I am on your shoulders

You raise me up, to more than I can be
You raise me up, to more than I can be

Overall Meaning

Bazil Meade's You Raise Me Up is a powerful and inspiring song that speaks to the relentless struggle of life and the hope that can be found in a relationship with a higher power. The lyrics begin with the recognition of human weakness and the inevitability of hardship. When troubles come, and the heart is burdened, the singer waits in silence until the divine presence arrives to bring comfort and hope.

The chorus of the song talks about the power of the divine presence to "raise me up" above the difficulties of life. This powerful metaphor speaks to the idea that with the help of the divine power, one can rise above the struggles of life and stand on the "mountains" that once seemed insurmountable. The image of walking on stormy seas suggests that even in the most tumultuous moments, the presence of the divine can give one a sense of strength and stability.

The final verse of the song speaks about the human condition and our longing for something more significant than ourselves. The hunger for something more is universal, and each restless heart beats imperfectly in its search for meaning. But the presence of the divine can bring a sense of wonder and glimpses of eternity, which helps to bring perspective and purpose to life.

Overall, Bazil Meade's You Raise Me Up is a song about hope and perseverance in the face of adversity. It speaks to our longing for a divine presence and the transformative power of that relationship to help us rise above our struggles and become more than we ever thought possible.

Just sing praise

I chose this version of the song as the singing and the orchestras, Irish National Symphony and RTE Concert orchestra doing an amazing job. I've also been a huge fan of London Community Gospel Choir, since first discovering gospel music at a brunch in America with my husband and finding out that although he won't come to church, he will come to hear and see performances of great gospel choirs. (Knowing this helps to inspire me to do more sing-alongs, to ultimately encourage all sorts of social gatherings to join in and enjoy the music). I've seen LCGC perform live a few times and had the "pinch myself is it really happening experience" of singing with them at one of their London church rehearsals, having had a few hours teaching prior to this with the hugely talented and inspirational founder and leader, Mr Basil Meade - I hasten to add this was a prize, not based on any talent of mine! Such a gifted crowd of people - one of those truly 'wow" moments.
