Deep Purple
Bea Wain & Larry Clinton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Woo,
Wo-o-oo-wo-wo,
Wo-o-oo-wo-wo,
Wo-o-oo-wo-wo
When the deep purple falls
Over sleepy garden walls
And the stars begin to twinkle in the night
In the mist of a memory
You wander all back to me
Breathing my name with a sigh

In the still of the night
Once again I hold you tight
Tho' you're gone your love lives on when light beams
And as long as my heart will beat
Sweet lover, we'll always meet
Here in my deep purple dreams

When the deep purple falls
Over sleepy garden walls
And the stars begin to twinkle
In the night
In the mist of a memory
You wander all back to me
Breathing my name with a sigh

In the still of the night
Once again I hold you tight
Tho' you're gone your love lives on when moonlight beams
And as long as my heart will beat
Sweet lover, we'll always meet
Here in my deep purple dreams
And as long as my heart will beat
Sweet lover, we'll always meet
Here in my deep purple dreams
Wo-o-oo-wo-wo,

Wo-o-oo-wo-wo,
Wo-o-oo-wo-wo

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Deep Purple describe the feeling of being in a dream-like state, where the memories of a past love come rushing back. The lines “And the stars begin to twinkle in the night / In the mist of a memory you wander all back to me” suggest a peaceful, almost mystical environment where the memories of someone long gone can be brought back to life through imagination. The song also alludes to the idea that the love between the singer and the subject of the song still lives on, even though they are no longer together physically. The lines “Tho' you're gone your love lives on when light beams / And as long as my heart will beat / Sweet lover, we'll always meet / Here in my deep purple dreams” show that the love between the two will never die.

The chorus of the song expresses the title, “Deep Purple,” which is referring to a time of day, where the purple light of dusk begins to blanket the sky. This moment seems to represent a kind of peaceful in-between, where the past and present blur together. Overall, the song conveys a sense of nostalgia and longing, suggesting that sometimes our dreams can take us to the place where we can be with the ones we love most.

This was one of my mom's favorite songs. An orchestral version was playing at her wake.

@sexymama1966

I love the 1963 version but if I'm in a slumber mood, i can go for this one.

@scotnick59

I like this version better than Artie Shaw's. Somebody: PLEASE post TOSSELLI'S SERENADE by Mr. Clinton: ingenious!

@lousarmento1127

So relaxing

@jasonnstegall

Since no one has the guts to say it here, I will…to think this may have inspired the name of a famous hard rock band…

@donkick2622

Correct but I believe the inspiration came from the Nino Tempo/April Stevens Version.

@snackcakeman

The stuff one can learn by messing around on YouTube. I saw April and Nino on a program from ‘63 thatDick Clark and Donna Loren co hosted. Upon research about Nino and April, I find out they are siblings and that it was done way before them.
