Look
Beach Boys/Brian Wilson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Maybe not one
Maybe you too
Wondering

Wondering who
Wonderful you
Wondering
Child, the child, the child, father of the sun

Where is the father (father of the sun)
Father of the child, where is the father, child, the child
Where is the wonderful me (father of the child)
Wonderful you

Though I know what you're wondering
If you are wonderful you
I can stop you wondering if you're my wonderful

Child, child, child
The child, the child
Father of the sun
Child, child, the child
Child, child, child
The child, the child

Father of the sun
Child, child, the child

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Beach Boys/Brian Wilson's song "Look" is a complex web of thoughts and questions that leave the listener with more questions than answers. The repetition of the words "maybe" and "wondering" creates a sense of uncertainty and confusion that the singer is trying to make sense of. It's possible that the song is a self-reflection of the singer's life, as they question their place in the world.

The repeated lines "father of the sun" and "child" also suggest a focus on family and lineage. This could be interpreted as the singer questioning their own father figure, or perhaps wondering about their own future as a parent. The use of "wonderful" could be seen as a way to question one's own greatness or purpose in life.

Overall, the song seems to be a stream of consciousness that delves into deeper themes of identity, family, and purpose. The repetition of certain phrases creates a sense of obsession and fixation on these themes, leaving the listener with a feeling of unease.

Brian is an absolute genius, the amount of mental gymnastics, and production, the layering, and the devotion to the ideas on top of ideas INSIDE ideas is still jaw-dropping and still unlike anything anyone has done before or since.

Between '64 and '67 Brian Wilson was functioning at an extraordinarily high level rarely seen in a non-academic capacity. That's where his unequivocal claim to genius lies - it's not just another case of just throwing the term around frivolously at a singer or musician you happen to like on a subjective level. I am and always will be in awe of this man and won't be ashamed to break down and cry on the day I no longer share this world with him

Brian is one of the most sincere and authenitic artists we've ever had.

Brian's voice made the Beach Boys sound what it was. Without his amazing voice there was no original Beach Boys sound. The band changed and was really never the same again. The first 45 I ever bought was Surfer Girl. Thank you, Brian. I will always love you.

He also wrote all The Beach Boys songs by himself.

Tony Simone

Wilson WAS The Beach Boys. He was to that band what Paul McCartney was to Wings. He did virtually everything.

@smkxodnwbwkdns Strangely enough there was a documentary on Sky Arts about the Beach Boys last night. Brian was interviewed in bed. It seems he liked to stay there away from the world. He appears to be a genuine "tortured" genius. There was a part in the doc about him coming under someones influence for a while. Apparently, he is very shy too.

Thanks for the information . I never knew. For some reason I had missed this until a few years ago. Pure Brian https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoqYQdregRI

Interviewer: ‘Why did you two decide to make a documentary?’
Brian: ‘Because I wanted to.’

Wow, he really is a rock star 😂

Brian Wilson came to my hometown in Northern Norway in 2009. To me, as a long time Beach Boys fan, that concert was magical, even though he obviously wasn't in his prime. I wrote a piece in the local newspaper before the concert where I declared Brian to be the greatest person to ever visit my hometown of Tromsø. I ended the piece with this line:
When you grow old, you can think back with joy that, despite all the other disappointments, you got to experience Brian Wilson himself when he was in Tromsø on 28 August 2009.

Gunnar Abrahamsson

Wonderful history.
