Wendy
Beach Boys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Wendy...Wendy what went wrong...oh, so wrong,
We went together for so long,
I never thought a guy could cry,
'Til you made it with another guy,
Oh, Wendy...Wendy left me alone.

Wendy...Wendy don't lose your head...
Lose your head,
Wendy...don't believe a word he says,
I can't picture you with him,
His future looks awful dim,
Oh, Wendy...Wendy left me alone.

Wendy...I wouldn't hurt you like that...
No, no, no,
I thought we had our love down pat...
Guess I was wrong,
The farthest thing from my mind,

Was the day that I'd wake up to find,
My Wendy...Wendy left me alone.

Overall Meaning

The Beach Boys "Wendy" is a song about a man who has been left alone by Wendy, whom he appears to have been in a relationship with for an extended period of time. He expresses regret at thinking she was the one, and how he wouldn't hurt her, like the other guy she is with ("I wouldn't hurt you like that"), who apparently is lying to her (don't believe a word he says"), upsetting the singer further since he imagines Wendy's future will be gloomy with such a man ("his future looks awful dim"). This song seems to be one of the earlier Beach Boys' tracks to feature a solid keyboard sound.

The song has a melancholic tinge, with the singer expressing his sadness of losing Wendy by implying that he never thought he was capable of crying ("I never thought a guy could cry"). The irony of it after their long companionship is tragic. There may also be an element of guilt, as he has to convince Wendy that he never wanted to hurt her, and that he thought they had something special ("thought we had our love down pat") Wendy has left him feeling alone and heartbroken ("Wendy...Wendy, left me alone").
