Formed in 2009, the act was originally a means to expand the solo project of Dustin Payseur. That same year bassist John Peña and guitarist Christopher Burke were recruited as the lineup for their initial tour. Their debut single, Daydream / Desert Sand was released in February 2010 on Captured Tracks. In May 2010, their debut album Beach Fossilswas released and met with favorable reviews.
The following years saw a number of changes to their lineup, including when John Peña left the band in 2011 to form Heavenly Beat, and guitarist Cole Smith, who left for his solo project, DIIV. In 2012, Tommy Gardner stepped in as the drummer to form their current lineup.
Clash the Truth was released in early 2013, peaking at number 40 on the Independent Albums chart. Paysuer described it as being an album about what happens after you've solved the immediate problems that come with moving away from home - "something that just doesn't feel like it makes sense yet".
In 2017, after a long break, the third album Somersault was released

But I will take you anywhere
I find you trying hard to act
When everything's up in the air
I walk with you across New York
We're on the bridge above the cars
We talk about how nice it is
That the city
Won't care who you are
In the first verse, the songwriter expresses their willingness to go to great lengths to reconnect with someone. They assert that they will run and bring this person back, emphasizing their dedication to the relationship. However, the songwriter also highlights their flexibility by stating that they are open to taking this person anywhere they desire. This may suggest a desire for compromise and adaptability within the relationship.
The second verse delves into the person's behavior, as the songwriter notices their struggle to maintain a facade of composure amidst uncertain circumstances. It seems that everything may be in a state of turmoil or unpredictability, causing this person to put on a front and attempt to appear in control. This line may reflect the songwriter's observations of the person's inner turmoil and their attempts to hide it.
Moving on to the third verse, the songwriter describes walking alongside this person in New York City, specifically on a bridge that overlooks a bustling street filled with cars. This image serves as a metaphor for the journey they are taking together. The mention of New York City also adds a sense of grandeur and significance to their connection, symbolizing the magnitude and importance of their bond.
Lastly, the fourth verse highlights a conversation between the songwriter and the person they are with. They discuss the city's accepting nature, suggesting that in this bustling metropolis, one's identity and background are irrelevant. This moment of reflection acknowledges the anonymity and freedom that can be found within urban settings, allowing individuals to shed societal expectations and be true to themselves. The songwriter finds solace in the fact that the city does not judge or discriminate based on who they are, possibly implying a desire for a relationship that embraces each other's authentic selves without judgment or societal constraints.
