Formed in 2009, the act was originally a means to expand the solo project of Dustin Payseur. That same year bassist John Peña and guitarist Christopher Burke were recruited as the lineup for their initial tour. Their debut single, Daydream / Desert Sand was released in February 2010 on Captured Tracks. In May 2010, their debut album Beach Fossilswas released and met with favorable reviews.

Clash the Truth was released in early 2013, peaking at number 40 on the Independent Albums chart. Paysuer described it as being an album about what happens after you've solved the immediate problems that come with moving away from home - "something that just doesn't feel like it makes sense yet".

I was smiling headfirst 'gainst the wind
It was in you that I could work around
So free
Then just keeps reminding me
All of these moments quickly passing me
Tell me is it really you?
You don't look the same as when I was dreaming
Even though it's not much time
I can't get it off my mind
Everything feels different now here without you
Even though it's not much time
I can't get it off my mind
Everything feels different now here without you
Out in the way
Out in the way
It was in you that I could work around
The lyrics of "Out in the Way" by Beach Fossils depict a sense of longing and loss for someone who may have passed away or left their life. The song starts with the singer being woken up and remembering a time when they were carefree and happy, smiling headfirst against the wind, and able to work around whatever came their way. However, the singer is now left with the realization that all these moments have quickly passed them by, and they feel lost without their loved one.
The second verse talks about the singer's struggle to come to terms with the absence of the person they miss. They wonder if they are really seeing them in the darkness or if they are just dreaming. The person they miss does not look the same, and everything feels different without them. The chorus is repeated twice, emphasizing the feeling of being lost and out of balance without the presence of their loved one.
Overall, the lyrics of "Out in the Way" convey a sense of vulnerability and emotional turmoil after the loss of someone dear. The song captures the bittersweet emotions of remembering happy times but also feeling the aching absence of a person who was important in our lives.
