Beanbag a… Read Full Bio ↴There has been more than one artist using the name Beanbag
Beanbag appeared with two tracks on the 1984 compilation LP, 'Bands That Could Be God', compiled by Gerard Cosloy of 'Conflict' fanzine. The compilation has become sought after as one of the better and more interesting compilations of US underground music of the time. The album pertained to be a selection of quality, though lesser-known underground music from Boston, Massachussetts, so presumably they were a Boston band or from thereabouts. The tracks had a 'lo-fi', though kind of 'new wave/synthpunk' sound. Two of the better-known artists on the compilation were Deep Wound and Moving Targets.
Beanbag was an Australian band that formed in 1995 and broke up in late 2002.
The group comprised core members vocalist Hans Van Vliet, guitarist Michael Mullins, bassist Phil "Hirvy" Hirvela, and drummer Phil Usher. Steven Lewis-Driver assumed the bass position when Hirvy left the band in early 2002. Jesse Palmer also filled in on guitar after Michael returned to Australia a couple months before the band's demise.
Beanbag released three albums. Guttersnipe was released independently in 1998. They also had two albums on American label Inpop Records, Free Signal (2000) and Welladjusted (2001). During their time in the United States, Beanbag toured extensively, were nominated for two GMA Awards, and had songs featured on several television soundtracks.
The band broke up after a van accident that occurred while driving back to Nashville. The driver swerved to avoid a deer on the interstate. The van and the trailer filled with their gear ended up in a ditch. Hunz was taken to the hospital where he stayed for three days with lung damage. With no vehicle, no gear, and no vocalist, they had very little choice except to disband.

Beanbag Lyrics

I fell that when I run I'm forced not to perspire
That picture that you hold you can't evern begin to be
So humor, so humor, so humor me!
What's up with this picture?
I thought we were in this together
I'm fighting so much pressure
At your, at your leisure
Maybe my faith is small when measured next to yours
Lucky for me it's not you that's saving us
I'm suffering your watching reviewing me
What's up with this picture?
I thought we were in this together
I'm fighting so much pressure
At your, at your leisure
Wide hope through side issues to portray disarray (4x)
What is it that you would want from me?
You visit slander instead of me
I've always been here to talk to you
The mirror has arms that cradle you (2x)
Wide hope through side issues to portray disarray (4x)
The song "Dynamic Lifter" by Beanbag revolves around the idea of the pressure to conform to another person's expectations and the burden of feeling inadequate. The lyrics speak of how the singer is not meeting the requirements of another person, and feels as though they are forced to run without breaking a sweat. They then question the other person's loyalty - wondering why they are not in it together. They express their frustration at feeling like they are being reviewed and watched, and that the other person is expecting more from them.
The phrase "so humor me" can be interpreted as a plea for the other person to try and understand their perspective. The chorus repeats the phrase "what's up with this picture?" which may symbolize a distorted or incomplete representation of the singer that the other person holds. The singer feels like they are fighting against pressure, but the other person has the luxury of doing things at their leisure.
The bridge of the song mentions "wide hope through side issues to portray disarray." This line could mean that the singer is trying to find hope through small issues that may not have much relevance but are still important to them. They use these "side issues" to distract them from the disarray that they feel internally. The final verse is a plea to the other person to communicate with them instead of resorting to slander, and that the singer has always been there to talk to them.
Overall, "Dynamic Lifter" is a song that speaks to the pressure of conforming to society's expectations and the burden of feeling inadequate. It's a plea for the other person to try and understand their perspective, to communicate with them instead of resorting to slander, and to look beyond the surface-level representation of the singer that they hold.
