Jon Philpot has previously released music as part of the duo Presocratics, in collaboration with guitarist and composer Need Thomas Windham. Presocratics released two albums on the record label Table of the Elements in 2001; both were produced by Philpot.
The first Bear in Heaven release (Tunes Nextdoor to Songs, Eastern Developments 2003) was an EP of solo recordings by Philpot, recorded in Atlanta, Georgia, with guest musicians performing on various instruments. Shortly after the release of Tunes Nextdoor to Songs, Philpot moved to Brooklyn, New York and joined with guitarist Adam Wills, keyboardist/guitarist Sadek Bazaraa (a graphic designer with Brooklyn design collective GH avisualagency), guitarist David Daniell (of San Agustin), and bassist James Elliott (Ateleia, School of Seven Bells). Eventually drummer Joe Stickney (drummer with Paul Duncan, Rhys Chatham's Essentialist project, and current touring drummer with Panthers) was added to the lineup. Daniell left Bear in Heaven in 2005 to focus on his solo project.
Red Bloom of the Boom, Bear in Heaven's first full-length album with the full band, was released in 2007 by the Hometapes record label.
Elliott left the band after the completion of the recordings of Red Bloom of the Boom to focus on School of Seven Bells and his solo project, Ateleia. Bear in Heaven now performs as a four-piece with Philpot on vocals, guitar and keyboards; Wills on guitar and bass; Bazaraa on bass and keyboards; and Stickney on drums.

I can't help but lay awake in my bedroom
The calm water should inspire my weary eyes
But this boy is running wild in overdrive
The hushed street is booming louder than my heartbeat
The sunrise reverberates, I will never sleep
The calm water should inspire my weary eyes
But this boy is running wild in overdrive
Cruel world, can't change a thing, crying at the television
Falling thru door after door into another room
Break down in a dreamless mood
The calm water echoes back in my weary eyes
But this boy is holding on to his thoughtful mind
Roll around hair in a fit, rattle on thoughtful mind
Cruel world can't change a thing, crying at the television
Roll around hair in a fit, rattle on thoughtful mind
Cruel world can't change a thing
Concrete breaks apart by my thumping heavy heart
Go on, go in, fall asleep
The calm water pulls me down with my weary eyes
So this boy can get lost his thoughtful mind
Wonderful peace in the air
Cruel world you are alone
Don't say that you aren't
A little bitter
A little confident, you loose
You are, falling out, the high window
Roll around, hair in a fit, rattle on thoughtful mind
Cruel world, can't change a thing, crying at the television
Roll around, hair in a fit, rattle on thoughtful mind
Cruel world, can't change a thing
The lyrics of "Noon Moon" by Bear in Heaven paint a vivid picture of a restless and unsettled mind in the late hours of the night. The singer finds themselves unable to sleep, caught between the bright streetlight and a half moon that fails to bring them any calm. The contrast between the external calmness of the water and the singer's internal restlessness is emphasized, as they describe themselves as "running wild in overdrive."
Despite the quietness of the surroundings, the singer's heartbeat and the booming street seem louder. The sunrise, which should typically inspire and bring peace, only serves to intensify their insomnia. The repetition of the line "roll around, hair in a fit, rattle on thoughtful mind" suggests a feeling of agitation and a continuous mental struggle. The lyrics also touch upon a sense of disillusionment and frustration with the world, as the singer cries at the television, feeling powerless to change anything.
The song expresses a longing to break free from this state of mind, to find peace and escape the overwhelming thoughts. The calm water becomes a symbol of solace, but the singer is still holding onto their restless and thoughtful mind. The final lines suggest a desire to surrender to sleep and let the calming water envelop them, allowing their mind to get lost in a moment of tranquility.
Overall, "Noon Moon" delves into the theme of sleeplessness, restlessness, and the longing for inner peace amidst the chaos of the world.
