i just got out of the hospital for an eating disorder that started out as just me trying to lose weight and ended up with me in danger of cardiac arrest. body dismorphia is no small shit and i’m really excited to see this when it comes out (and if i’m ready since i do unfortunately still suffer from being insanely easily triggered by….. everything). thank you so much for bringing a funny and realistic representation of how shit feels when you hate your body! it means a lot as someone who was also somewhat fat her whole life and can’t get over the fact that my ed only made me look average instead of skinny. love the concept!

be super careful. i've been recovered for 20 years and i still get triggered easily. pull out at the first sign of feeling that way, it's literal life or death. imho if you just got out no way should you be consuming content abt EDs and weight loss.

Growing up I always thought I was fat (definitely wasn’t) and hated my body. Then became disabled at 16, immediately gained the better part of 100 pounds, and went through the self hatred tenfold.

I’m only just now getting to a point where I’ve learned to accept myself. I don’t love my body, I don’t think I ever will. But I'm okay with it now and I'm learning to work with it. I still have to fight off disordered thoughts, and I have to be conscious of when I'm subconsciously doing things, but I'm getting there.

Losing weight and learning to accept yourself are two entirely different battles. I wish you so much luck with both, as well as the documentary

I said this to someone else's comment to but reading yours made me think you deserve to hear it too, I hope you don't mind the copy/pasta, I mean it as much as I meant it the first time: You've got this. It's one moment at a time, as cliche as that sounds. Just one positive decision at a time. And if you make a choice that you don't like, do your best to like the next choice that you make. My mom used to say "give yourself grace", which means that we need to understand that we deserve love and support from ourselves. If you wouldn't say it to another person, don't say it to yourself. It's easier said than done, but we win when we have more good days than bad. <3 good luck!

Fuck. You literally described my childhood in that song lmao. My mother unfortunately pushed her eating disorders onto me. almost a munchausin by proxy situation, except it was with diabetes. She would get me checked for diabetes every once in a while and when I was 8, maybe even 7, she made me go on diets and workout with her. I am all for encouraging families to get excercise together. But not when you do it at the expense of the child. She would time it so horribly, and would always pull me from hanging out with my friends to do a 40-90 minute workout regiment with her. One time I said my mouth tasted like honey and she literally started sobbing because she thought I had diabetes and I got taken in to be tested after that, I did in fact not have diabetes. What I did however have, was a mouth full of honey flavor from cereal. I had just eaten breakfast. At the time that would have been honey nut cheerios or those honeycomb cereal things. Both of which taste like honey to an extent.
I got such a severe body dysmorphia that I thought I was MASSIVE as a kid.
And just like you, I look back at photos and I am just... at a loss as to how I thought that at the time. And now I kind of made my fear come true. And like you, except in 2014/15, I lost around 45 pounds. 16 yrs old, 6', pushing my joints past their limits, 218 pounds I think at the time, down to 170 I think. Then gave up and gained it back because my body dysmorphia was so severe that I still pictured myself as huge. Didn't help that everyone around me called me fat. Just because I had some tits. Close friends even said I looked the exact same. That was killer to me.
Fast forward to now, I am 320 pounds. I am 6'4". I am bigger. But I wouldn't call myself morbidly obese. I have learned to love my body, because my digestion has always been so bad that I would have to pretty severely starve myself to lose anything significant. I feel good at my weight. I am beautiful in my own right.
I wish my childhood wasn't stolen from me.

Im sorry to hear that that is your story. I wish you the best in healing! My whole life my mom has talked down on her appearance, doesn’t like to have photos taken of her, literally just hates the way she looks, never told me i was pretty or beautiful like most mothers would to a daughter, i grew up and started to nitpick my looks and now when people say “your mom is pretty” or “you look like your mom!” I immediately say NO!! Its been so ingrained in my mind since childhood that it became truth. Only recently did I realize its not real, just how she feels about herself. I now have a son and i am hyperaware of everything i say because i truly do not want to do the same thing to him! Even though he is only a toddler i always try to tell him he is handsome and sweet and cute and smart. I want to break the cycle.

Ironically enough, I went through my own weight loss journey this past year; and my own dysmorphia developed as a result of rapid weight loss. I started to hate my body at 7/8 years old when in ballet class they made us be weighed and measured one by one to make our leotards and I was the heaviest (without taking into account that I was the tallest).
I'm currently overweight and it's strange, because it doesn't bother me so much that I'm fat in general, but I feel like there are things in my body that shouldn't be there. Honestly, sometimes I look in the mirror and feel like there are parts of me that shouldn't be there, that something is wrong with me and that part looks disturbing/strange, like it's not part of me.

The thing about thinking you’ve always been fat, but actually weren’t, I can relate to it so much. My whole life I thought I was always a big chubby kid because my classmates always commented on it and I was taller than the girls my age at the time. I looked back at old photos and I wasn’t even fat, I was just very tall. Even in my early teens I looked good, I wasn’t skinny but nor was I overweight or fat. It was around my mid teens I actually started to gain weight exponentially and now in my young adult stage the weight gain didn’t stop :( I tried dieting, worked 2 years ago and lost 20kg, but gained all of it back…

I’ve been watching what I eat, and I’ve lost a lot of weight as well. I’ve struggled with weight all my life.

I’m at a weight now I haven’t been since high school or middle school. People HAVE NOTICED and they remark about it A LOT. I’m proud of myself because I did this by myself and without surgery all while being bound to a wheelchair too, but while saying that, it really makes me sad that all my life people probably just saw my weight first. Which was one of the reasons why I hated myself for so long; because of how people perceived me. I don’t even feel any different due to my weight loss, but people treat me differently for sure.

And i look back at the old me,who was fit and normal,and was bullied into thinking I was fat,I even got into fights with my mom where she told me I was just like any other kid,but everyone else told me the opposite.

i’ve had body dysmorphic disorder since i was 10-11ish and this is so relatable. my main area was my skin, but it spread to the rest of my body as well. i feel like i’ve lost so much life and it feels so lonely. my body is the only thing i think about all day. i had to remove all of the mirrors in my home last year because i couldn’t stop mirror gazing and picking at my skin, lol. thank u for sharing <3

"All of my life I thought that I was fat, even when I wasn't" - that hit me like a ton of fucking bricks dude. Being a teen girl in late 00s/ early 2010s, I had to deal with a lot of feelings of inadequacy. The beauty standard back then was "cocaine chic" - be so skinny, you look like you're dying. I was only slightly bigger than my classmates (now I found out it was because of PCOS, which I "affectionately" call "fat & hairy bitch syndrome" :')), but I wasn't fat and my BMI was really good. Still, some girls were giving me shit for being fatter, so I gave in and stress ate a lot to cope. I'm fat now and to be honest, my body dysmorphia is much worse. I want to time travel to my past self and tell her that giving into peer pressure is so much worse than not being skinny. To be honest, for some people you will never be enough either way, even if you're actually dying from an ED. Fuck those people.
I'm curious to see how the project will go, especially since it's also going to talk about the issue from non-female perspective, which we need more of imo! Subbed to the channel and excited for more :) But also, please, take care of your mental health as much as you can while doing this project, because attempting weight loss for any kind of outside attention, whether peer pressure or making an artistic statement, is a dangerous territory you can easily lose yourself in.

Good Luck Ryan! I have been for a very long time ever since I recognized you from AGT, I sincerely hope you succeed in this endeavour! I have also lost weight from a similar place that you are at now. The key for me was fun exercise. Losing weight without exercise is a bitter experience where you have to eat very little. Exercising allows you a lot more wiggle room and it makes you feel like your not actually in a calorie deficit. (e.g. walking 5k = 400 calories = extra portion of supper basically)The forms of exercise that I turned to where bike rides, walks with the dogs and people that I love, biking and swimming. Wishing you the best of luck with the documentary’s success.

Ps: To keep the weight off, the healthy eating and exercise that I did had to become a life long habit. In this modern world and especially America everything around you is so unhealthy that this is basically the only way and simultaneously the reason why people fail and put back on the weight. The old eating habits will be long ingrained into you and will be hard to break. I hope that you get back up and brush yourself off after eery failure. Best of luck to u Ryan.

I found out about you when another youtuber referenced a video you did where you danced nearly naked. As a person that also struggles significantly with their body image it brought me so much joy. Even though it was for a joke I thought you were beautiful and it made me think that maybe I could be beautiful too.
