Carry Me Home
Beasts With No Name Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Count to three
Repeat after me
I need a strong...
Show me your face
Why you looking away?
Walk and you playing close

Don't set me at the river
Don't let me go
I can't swim in the river
But don't let me go
Come on and carry me home

Set me on fire
With a look in your eyes
Sending me shivers and burn
My fingers are numb
My mind is done
Watching you twisted every word

Don't set me at the river
Don't let me go
I can't swim in the river
But don't let me go
Come on and carry me home

Don't set me at the river
Don't let me go
I can't swim in the river
But don't let me go

Come on and carry me home
Carry me home

Overall Meaning

In the opening lines of "Carry Me Home," the singer is asking for some sort of strength or support, but can't quite articulate what they need. The repetition of "count to three" and "repeat after me" implies that they're trying to follow someone else's lead, but still feel lost. The next two lines, "I need a strong... / Show me your face" suggest that they're looking for a leader or mentor who can guide them towards the strength and support they need. However, when they demand "why you looking away?" it's clear that the person they're looking to is either avoiding them or doesn't have the answer they seek. "Walk and you playing close" is a bit more ambiguous, but it seems to imply that the person they're looking to is being elusive or keeping their distance.

The second verse of "Carry Me Home" is a little clearer in its message - the singer wants to be moved, emotionally or otherwise, by someone with a powerful presence. "Set me on fire / With a look in your eyes / Sending me shivers and burn" implies a physical attraction, but also suggests that this person has some sort of charisma that the singer finds irresistible. The line "Watching you twisted every word" could be interpreted a few different ways, but it seems to imply that the singer is so enamored with this person that they'll forgive any flaws or manipulations they might exhibit.

Overall, the song seems to be about the desire for guidance and support, and the frustration that comes when those things are hard to find. The image of being carried home implies that the singer wants to be taken care of, but also suggests that they're tired and in need of respite.
