The Heaviest Stone
Beau Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They gave me soil and a measureful of sand,
But it ran between the fingers of my hand.
And it's been that way since life at first began;
The heaviest stone that the Devil could throw at Man.

They gave me water from a falling mountain stream,
And a sense to both imagine and to dream.
But there were holes around the bottom of the can;
The heaviest stone that the Devil could throw at Man.

They gave me seas and the wide desert sand,
And the hardest and the driest of land,
But the storms overcame my caravan;
The heaviest stone that the Devil could throw at Man.

They gave me bread and a forest full of meat,
And a fire in the shelter for heat,
But the flood took the flame from the pan;
The heaviest stone that the Devil could throw at Man.

They gave me strength and the will to survive.
They stoned me, but still I'm alive.
And in the end, I understood their plan;
The heaviest stone that the Devil could throw at Man.

And in the end, I understood their plan;
The heaviest stone that the Devil could throw at Man.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Beau's song "The Heaviest Stone" allude to a deeper meaning of struggle and hardship in life. The opening lines describe the common struggles of life, where the soil and sand given to make a foundation for oneself, soon slips through the fingers, creating an unstable base. The author then sings about being given water to sustain oneself, such as a mountain stream, but are given a broken vessel and limited supplies, creating another form of struggle.

The author then points out harsh environments such as seas and deserts, trying to survive in the hardest of conditions, only to have it destroyed by a harsh storm while struggling to be able to feed oneself through hunting, fishing, or even gathering to be only to have it taken by a devastating flood. These examples illustrate the metaphorical stones that life throws at people, and how the hardest of them all is the one in which we must throw at ourselves to overcome these obstacles.

The last verse describes the resilience of humankind and how we develop strength and will to survive despite the hardships thrown at us. The final lines provide a moment of enlightenment or understanding that we can appreciate the struggles and hardships thrown at us as they strengthen us in the end.
