Belle
Beauty & The Beast Company Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Is he gone?
Oh, can you imagine?
He asked me to marry him
Me, the wife of that boorish, brainless

Madame Gaston, can't you just see it?
Madame Gaston, his little wife, ugh
No sir, not me, I guarantee it
I want much more than this provincial life

I want adventure in the great wide somewhere
I want it more than I can tell

And for once it might be grand to have someone understand
I want so much more than they've got planned

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song Belle from Beauty & The Beast Company are centered on Belle, the singer of the story. In this particular part of the song, Belle has just come back from the bookstore where she met the Beast for the first time. Her neighbors in the village are curious about what happened to Belle and ask her various questions.

The lyrics start with Belle's neighbor asking her if the Beast is gone. Belle, lost in thought, cannot imagine life without the Beast. She then reveals that the Beast had asked her to marry him. Belle's neighbor, Madame Gaston, then imagines herself in the same position as Belle, dreaming of being the wife of the handsome and popular Gaston. However, Belle is fiercely independent and rejects the idea of marrying just for the sake of it. She wants much more than the provincial life that her neighbors are content with.

Belle then breaks into a song about her desire for adventure and a life beyond the confines of her small village. She yearns for the great wide somewhere, a place where she can live free and explore the world. Belle is not satisfied with the standard path that has been set out for her and wants to create her own destiny. The lyrics show Belle as a strong, independent woman who wants to break free from the societal constraints placed upon her.

It would have taken more than one scene to see Craig turn around - just like it took many scenes to see Eric turn around to what he used to be.

What you're asking might require a mini-series - or even a full several year series - because Craig had more than one bad issue going on inside (misunderstanding women, thinking only about himself, looking at only her beauty and not hearing her words, believing his thinking FOR her should've been enough for her to be happy, being jealous of men who had, or who developed, more economic means than he did, being willing to (all caps used for emphasis only, not to internet scream) LIE AND CAUSE HER DAD, HER AND HER FAMILY PAIN and ANGUISH to get her -- WHILE THINKING THIS WAS OK AND MANLY, AND THAT HE COULD LIVE WITH HIMSELF FOREVER HAVING DONE THIS WITH NO ISSUES/QUALMS NOR ANY REMORSE WHATSOEVER ! etc. Ugh!

Whereas Eric was simply BLINDED BY INTENSE GRIEF AS WELL AS FROZEN IN HIS EMOTIONS DUE TO HAVING BEEN TRAUMATIZED - YES, WHAT HE WENT THRU IN THAT CAR FOR HOURS HELPLESS - WAS TRAUMA - BY BEING IN THAT CAR ALONG WITH HER NOT BEING ABSOLUTELY SURE IF SHE WERE DEAD OR ALIVE - HIMSELF BEING UNABLE TO MOVE A FINGER AS HE WAS TRAPPED!, while he waited, praying that she was ok, for help to come on that UNusually empty-of-other-people highway! That was AN AWFUL LOT TO DEAL WITH!

Before that day, he went to church and was a happy and ethical and well- mannered husband and person.

Eric had truly legit reasons for being this way, Craig only had possibly bad upbringing and serious immaturity and possibly simply a bad nature.

But you know what, I think that scene in the diner for breakfast where she pushes him off that bench and his cousin leaves him on the floor in front of everyone there IS that scene - sometimes it takes anger and embarrassing someone to make THEM realize they ARE (and NEED TO BE) redeemable!

I really appreciate how Belle didn’t react most of the time against a lot of abusive behavior. I would have reacted like most of the characters against this abuse. Belle was so kind and loving. Her Christ-like life had a real positive influence on Eric. I think this is also true in real life. I sure want to live like that.
