Broken Drum
Beck Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I see you there
Your long black hair
Your eyes just stare
Your mind is turning

You know I'll laugh
And I won't take it back
I've seen your eyes I know
What your thinking

And one by one
We'll shoot our guns
We'll have fun
Don't ever doubt it

And when I say
Fare thee well
My only friend
Oh how the days go

Your setting sun
Your broken drum
Your little drugs

I'll never forget you
Never

Forget
You

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Broken Drum" by Beck evoke a sense of nostalgia and regret. The song reflects on a friendship that has come to an end. The opening lines describe the subject's appearance in detail, highlighting her long black hair and staring eyes. The next few lines express that the singer will always laugh and not regret his past actions. He claims to understand her thoughts and doubts her ability to believe that they will not have fun shooting their guns together.

The chorus contains some of the most poignant lines in the song. The singer bids farewell to his friend, acknowledging that the days have gone by too quickly. The setting sun is a reminder that the end is near, and the broken drum symbolizes the passing of time. The line about "little drugs" could describe a drug addiction that contributed to the strained friendship. The final three lines are a declaration that the singer will never forget his friend.

"Broken Drum" received positive reviews from critics and was included on Beck's album "Guero." The song was co-written by Jon Brion, who also produced the track. Brion played multiple instruments on the song, including drums, bass, and piano. Beck's distinctive vocal style and the song's melancholic melody helped "Broken Drum" become one of the standout tracks on the album. It also earned a spot on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Best Songs of 2005.

Beck himself says this is his favorite remix ever. When asked what Boards Of Canada brought to the song, Beck explained, "Well, they brought something that was there, but then they just added a whole new dimension. I guess it's quite an emotional song and they brought out something bittersweet in it that was kinda hippyish, but it doesn't maim you with saccharine. It kinda gets you right in the chest.

Love these pieces of trivia! Can never know enough about Boards and their friends.

Johnny Creighton

Reminds me of when I visited Vancouver, and on the third day, hitched the highway to Fairbanks Alaska, in August 1996. Went through the Seven Sisters' mountains, stopped at a slag heap to look for jade, later stopped in Whitehorse, caught a ride with a submariner in a hot red convertible, among other adventures.

@Johnny Creighton whats a cool story!✌

I came across this song randomly. After an emotionally distressing few days. This song came on and I sat in silence, hypnotized, staring nowhere, listening to my soul expressed. That hypnotic meloncholy sweetness. That was years ago, when I hear it now, it takes me right back to that room. I can see almost every detail. Not just of the room, but that place in time. I can remember the places I'd go, the people I hung out with, the liquor I drank, the graveyard across the street, the steps I would sit on trying to make sense of anything. What a fucked up time that was. I didn't learn a goddamn thing either.

Soul Slip

Haha great depressing story... love it and have experienced similar things haha... life is a messed up show sometimes... it’s funny, but in a nihilistic way in those moments... like... “we are just here for the show..” lol best part was.... “the graveyard across the street..” hope things are better now... cheers
