Erase The Sun
Beck Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Offices and fountains they named for you
Stacks and zealots wither in shit-filled rooms
Hari-karis barely a tear for you
Hairy fairies spinning the golden looms

Wake up the ghosts and lepers
Aching in their slavery smoke
Delinquent hygiene's atrocious
We'll shoot out the great white crescent
We'll shoot out the great white crescent

Fisticuffs and zithers of Zanzibar
Body pills and shiver and caviar
Dazzlements and accidents body's chart
Choice cut meats of derelict boulevards

Wake up the ghosts and lepers
Aching up their slavery smoke
Delinquent hygiene's atrocious
We'll shoot out the great white crescent
We'll shoot out the great white crescent

Wake up the ghosts and lepers
Aching in their slavery smoke
Delinquent hygiene's atrocious

We'll shoot out the great white crescent
We'll shoot out the great white crescent

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Beck's song "Erase The Sun" seem to be a surreal portrayal of a dystopian world, filled with chaos and decay. The first few lines seem to refer to a society that glorifies its leaders and powerful figures, naming offices and fountains after them. However, the following lines paint a more grim picture of this world, where "stacks and zealots wither in shit-filled rooms" and "Hari-karis barely a tear for you". This seems to suggest that the powerful figures are not as revered as they seem and are in fact, responsible for the decay and suffering of those around them.

The next few lines talk about "wake up the ghosts and lepers" and "aching in their slavery smoke", perhaps referring to those who are oppressed and marginalized in this society, who are trying to rise up against their oppressors. However, even in this rebellion, there seems to be a sense of chaos and violence, with "fisticuffs and zithers of Zanzibar" and "body pills and shiver and caviar". The song ends with a call to action to "shoot out the great white crescent", which could represent a symbol of the oppressive forces that are keeping the marginalized masses down.

Holy crap! I just tried to listen to the 2006 version and truly it is an abomination! It's literally like it's being played at the wrong speed. What were they thinking? It's like listening to a re-release of 'Eleanor Rigby' by the Beatles with breakbeats and a sample of someone yelling 'Aw yeah, let's kick it!', or listening to Metallica's '...And Justice For All' as it was actually released.

god this song is creepy and i love it. Must have been such a shock to hear this song directly after Deadweight because they are basically polar opposites

Ashley M. Beaufille Cook

It's not only slower than the one everyone is thinking of, it's also in a different key.
