Rest of the Day
Bedhead Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I had to wake up my head first
My body had a few more minutes
And my throat was dying of thirst
Of course I should have known the morning would be this way
But there was no use ignoring
The rest of the day

Since people are dying in almost every possible place
I'd rather not leave the bed here with you
Since there's a dead black cat scattered on my street
I'd rather stay here
Under the sheets

There was a parade outside the window with no cars
Just dead cats being pulled
By horses with blinds over their eyes
I'm sure we could see ourselves rolling in the cats

When the carts moved back and forth
Hitting the holes in the street

Overall Meaning

The song Rest of the Day by Bedhead is a reflective and contemplative piece about the overwhelming sense of despair and helplessness that life seems to bring. The opening line "I had to wake up my head first, my body had a few more minutes" sets the tone for the rest of the song. The singer seems to be struggling with the sense of apathy and futility that accompanies a world where "people are dying in almost every possible place." The imagery of the "dead black cat scattered on my street" only serves to intensify this sense of hopelessness.

In the second stanza, the singer expresses a desire to stay in the comfort of their bed, away from the realities of the world outside. The parade outside their window, with dead cats being pulled by blind horses, is a surreal and disturbing image that reinforces the futility of life. The final line "I'm sure we could see ourselves rolling in the cats when the carts moved back and forth, hitting the holes in the street" is a poignant observation on the ways in which we are all caught up in the same cycle of life and death.

Ultimately, Rest of the Day is a song about the overwhelming sense of despair that comes from feeling powerless in the face of the world's problems. It's a deeply introspective and personal piece that captures the alienation and isolation that many of us feel in the modern world.

I really do wish Behead got more of their due. They were an outstanding band. I was lucky to go on tour with them in '95. I had the chance to watch them every night for about a month and I was always enraptured. I would find different places to be every night so I could focus on different parts of what each of the different musicians were up to. It was a true joy.

The ending almost hurts for its persistent jabs that threaten to break the skin and reveal whats inside. I cry everytime i hear this.
