"From this distant vantage point, the Earth might not seem of particular interest. But for us, it's different. Consider again that dot. That's here, that's home, that's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand. It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known."
-Carl Sagan

To be ready to depart believe me,
I hold on to all of that which freely,
Floats about under my feet beneath me.
Elevation ever rising I'm shown,
Upwards into everything that's unknown,
What's the meaning or the purpose? I'll go,
Floating upward,
Searching forward,
Reaching inward,
For my soul.
Bring me back home, To the world that I've known,
I resent this, Resistance!
How have I grown, From the people I've known?
I can't bear this, Distance!
Distance!
I'll be waiting for gravity, to be,
Pulling me back,
I'll be running on empty, 'till we,
Find the right track.
Bring me back home, To the world that I've known,
I resent this, Resistance!
How have I grown, From the people I've known?
I can't bear this, Distance!
Distance!
Distance!
Now I can grow from the people I know,
There is no resentment left that I show,
All I had to do to fall was let go,
I have bridged the distance over the flow.
Now I can grow from the people I know,
There is no resentment left that I show,
All I had to do to fall was let go,
I have bridged the distance over the flow.
I'll be waiting for gravity, to be,
Pulling me back,
I'll be running on empty, till we,
Find the right track.
The lyrics of "Cosmonaut" by Being describe the feeling of being lost in the vastness of the unknown, whether it be mentally or physically. The first two lines suggest that no matter how prepared someone may be, they are never truly ready to depart from what they know. They hold onto everything that is familiar to them, even as they float into uncharted territory. As they rise higher, they are faced with the uncertainty of what they will find, but they still press on even though they do not have all the answers.
The chorus of the song seems to express a yearning to return to the world that is familiar to them. They resent the resistance they are facing and cannot bear the distance between where they are and where they came from. However, as the song progresses, the lyrics suggest that growth comes from leaving one's comfort zone and embracing the unknown. The final verse talks about how the singer has finally let go and fallen, bridging the distance between where they were and where they needed to be. They have learned that in order to grow, they cannot be tethered to what they knew before and must embrace the uncertainty of what lies ahead.
Overall, the song seems to be a reflection on the struggle between comfort and growth. The fear of the unknown and the desire to cling to what is familiar can hold us back from reaching our full potential, but we must be willing to take the leap and trust that we will find our way back home.
