"Bel" is an Akkadian contraction of "ba'al," meaning "lord."
It does say the Babylonians had this idol, and in Babylonia the word "Bel" was first used as the Akkadian equivalent of the Sumerian "En."
When Hammurabi made Babylon one of the most powerful cities, its local god Marduk received the title of Bel. Is this an idol therefore to Marduk?
Jeremiah 50:2 says "Babylon is taken, Bel is confounded, Merodach is broken in pieces..."

Are there any context clues to help us understand, definitively, if this idol was to Marduk/Merodach? Or just a general idol?

Is Marduk the same as Baal-Hadad, or no? Is the idol, Bel, Marduk?

I know that "ba'al" can be both a proper noun (Ba'al-Hadad, later known only as Ba'al, as with "God," which became a name), and a term, meaning "lord," but Hadad has high religious and cultural translatability.

And who accepts this text as canon? I know some accept and some reject it. I've already read the Wikipedia page, I don't trust Wiki. I see you've labeled it apocrypha.

i have just recently started reading my Bible for the first time since my childrens Bible when i was really young. Trying to find my way back to Christ. But I do remember Daniel being my favorite story. Cant wait to read the real version as an adult. Just started Deuteronomy. God Bless.

Please consider taking my advice, as an individual follower of Jesus Christ without any motive other than trying to help you avoid the many snares and/or confusions:
Start by reading/listening to KJV, beginning with Matthew 3 (which is the true/original start of the Gospel of Matthew).

@John Flower yes. I wrote this a while ago. I have learned so much. I have the KJV. I've read it all the way through once now. I've read the whole new testament twice, and a few books if the NT three or four times now, Thessalonians and Corinthians, Hebrews are my favorites. I've been picking and choosing the old testament books to read a second time. Way out of order. But now i have a concordance, so I'm going back through and truly studying every name and place and meaning of all the different words. It is amazing. I've learned so much with the concordance. And the Holy Spirit has finally led me to a true Bible believing Fundamental Baptist Church. So i can finally fellowship with true KJV Bible believers, and their programs for the kids is absolutely amazing. I know that part isn't important at all, but it is a major help for me in teaching my children how to be good Christians and the Word as i myself am in the process of learning still. But the Holy Spirit has truly revealed so much to me already, i pray before i start reading everyday. I read every single day. This is the True Living Word of God. And i have never had so much joy in my life as i do now having accepted the free gift of salvation, by the Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ shed on the cross. Thank you for your advice. God bless you.
