Belong began on the WestBank of New Orleans in 2002, but it was not until 2004 that "October Language" was made. The album was assembled, composed, and produced in Dietrich's bedroom studio; however, the inspiration for the songs goes well beyond the walls. The album encapsulates their hometown of New Orleans, at once bathed in sunlight and colors, yet dripping in decay and a rich sadness. It is a record that attempts to display the beauty in things that are worn, decayed or destroyed.
Following in the tradition of bands like My Bloody Valentine and Gas, guitars, synths and other musical sources are wrenched from their typical tones, revealing themselves in bright shards of distortion. Melodies are similarly enveloped in a sort of aural atrophy, forever repeating their blurring calls. At the end, all that remains is a noise so potent it leaves the sonic equivalent of the sun's imprint on a retina.
Turk Dietrich has previously collaborated with Telefon Tel Aviv's Joshua Eustis under the name Benelli, whose remix of Nine Inch Nails' "The Frail (Version)" is found on the acclaimed NIN EP "Things Falling Apart". Eustis played a small part in the production of "October Language", in addition to playing slide guitar on the album's title track.

I wonder when or if we’ll ever hear more from Belong. They just vanished
Thom Bykov
dogeymon83 oh yess, I never really was into them going electronic. They sound the best with the shoegaze elements
dogeymon83
Trent Bykov They went onto doing that Second Woman thing but that stuff is just way too experimental and not even the same category.
Thom Bykov
Yeah, its kind of a shame. There seems to be so little information about the guys as well. They really made something unique with Common Era, which is upsetting because I’m hungry for more.

Nicolas Cordoba I would always go to sleep with Belong music playing at a faint volume in the background and it would send me right to sleep. So peaceful.

I haven't heard a darker shoegaze album than this, this album and song are like its own genre. It's like an indescribable dark place in the soul

Aliens visit us a million years from now. There’s no life on the planet as they scan the planet below. The captain of the ship inquires about any artificial structures or anything of note. The first in command says there’s a group of humanoids with decently intact cortexes. They scan the brains of these ancient humans; Belong plays over spaceship’s speakers.
