Red Pawn's Race
Belvedere Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So far away from west he rose
Another entrepreneur whose dreams have failed
Don′t say a word, his ashen nose
You want to hear how mankind's up for sale?
Don′t run away while looking back
You're moving forward running twice as fast
What have we done? Extinction's here
The best intentions paved with looking glass

Another push, another pull, why can′t we see ideals
That bears responsibility, another bomb that waits to go
I should have been the kind of man portrayed in History books
Instead of the man I′m running from
I never viewed it rationally

I know a road that twists and turns
It's paved with good intentions while it burns
Let′s save the world, go back in time
Another paradox could save our lives
It's many miles, like Dyson′s past
You can unwind it if you move too fast
The Queen's pace can′t slow you down
You're saving all of humanity, we're bound

Another push, another pull, why can′t we see ideals
That bears responsibility, another bomb that waits to go
I should have been the kind of man portrayed in History books
Instead of the man I′m running from
I never viewed it rationally

There is a road I know leads back to the beginning
There is a road I know leads back to the beginning
There is a road I know leads back to the beginning

Another push, another pull, why can't we see ideals
That bears responsibility, another bomb that waits to go
I should have been the kind of man portrayed in History books

Instead of the man I′m running from
I never viewed it rationally

Overall Meaning

The Belvedere's song "Red Pawn's Race" is reflective of the artist's concern about human greed and its impact on the environment. The opening lines, "So far away from the West he rose, another entrepreneur whose dreams have failed," depict the failure of capitalism and the greed-driven ventures that it spawns. The subsequent lines, "Don't say a word, his ashen nose, you want to hear how mankind's up for sale?" portrays the artist's dislike for how society is willing to consume and exploit the planet for profit. The line "What have we done? Extinction's here" presents the artist's tacit concern for the environment and how its reckless destruction may someday lead to the end of life as we know it.

The lines "I never viewed it rationally" and "There is a road I know leads back to the beginning" portray the artist's failure to understand the science behind the impacts of human actions on the planet. The lyrics suggest that humanity is reckless and should be more scientific in its view of the world. The line "Another paradox could save our lives" implies that there could be a scientifically sound way to reverse the damage done to the environment.
