Sister
Ben Howard Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Love comes and goes
You walk a tight rope
Through it
Who really knows
On tiptoes
Picking acorn burrs
Spring comes too early most years now
Sister
Eat away fear and cold
I was lookin' for
Went away, turned cold
I won't lose her
Picking rose petals
Spring comes too early most years now
Spring comes too early most years now
Spring comes too early most years now
Spring comes too early most years now
The lyrics of Ben Howard's song "Sister" convey themes of love, uncertainty, and the passage of time. The opening verse, "Love comes and goes, You walk a tight rope," suggests the fragile and unpredictable nature of love, where one must navigate carefully to maintain balance. The use of the metaphorical "tight rope" symbolizes the delicate equilibrium required in relationships, indicating the challenging nature of sustaining love.
The repetition of "Spring comes too early most years now" throughout the song may allude to the rapid passage of time and the changing seasons, serving as a metaphor for the cyclical nature of life and emotions. This recurring phrase could also signify a sense of disorientation or unease caused by the unexpected and premature arrival of certain experiences or feelings. The mention of acorn burrs and rose petals further emphasizes the imagery of nature and growth, underscoring the transformative and cyclical aspects of relationships and emotions.
The verse "Eat away fear and cold, I was lookin' for, Went away, turned cold" suggests a desire for comfort and warmth in the face of fear and uncertainty. The singer seems to be searching for solace and stability but experiences disappointment when those feelings fade away and are replaced with coldness. The reference to eating away fear may imply a coping mechanism or a way of addressing anxieties, hinting at the complexities of emotional processes and the need for self-preservation.
The repeated mention of "Sister" throughout the song could represent a bond or relationship that holds significance for the singer. The act of picking acorn burrs and rose petals may symbolize the act of seeking out beauty and small joys amidst the uncertainties and challenges of life. Overall, the lyrics of "Sister" by Ben Howard evoke a sense of vulnerability, nostalgia, and the inevitability of change, inviting listeners to reflect on the complexities of love, loss, and the passage of time.
