When in high school in 1987-1990 I had a friend who was a DJ who got all the records from DMC sent from London exclusively for DJ's that were a member of this particluar clubb, where they recieved the latest mixes on vinyl bedfore anybody else. He had a huge collection of these predominantly white covers in his gigantic album collection. He introduced me to this particular mix by Ben Liebrand, and I was completely sold. Even though expressly forbidden, he made me a taped copy of this song to cassette. And I had that cassette in my car for many years after that and I totally wore the tape thin, as that was the only song I played from that cassette all the time over and over again. Play ... rewind, Play ... rewind, Play ... rewind, etc. etc.
This is truly the art of mixing. The magical marriage between a 1950's classic and 1980's M|A|R|R|S Pump up the Volume, and actually making it sound as the entire mix is an original song, meant to sound exactly like this - that was the true art of mixing.
Ben Liebrand is cited as inspiration by gazillions of both later mixers, musicians, etc. True genious.
