Maggie May
Ben Mills Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Wake up Maggie I think I've got something to say to you.
It's late September and I really should be back at school.
I know I keep you amused but I feel I'm being used.
Oh Maggie I couldn't have tried any more.
You led me away from home just to save you from being alone.
You stole my heart and that's what really hurts.

The morning sun when it's in your face really shows your age
But that don't worry me none in my eyes you're everything.
I laughed at all of your jokes - my love you didn't need to coax.
Oh, Maggie I couldn't have tried any more.
You led me away from home, just to save you from being alone
You stole my soul and that's a pain I can do without.

All I needed was a friend to lend a guiding hand
But you turned into a lover
And mother what a lover, you wore me out.
All you did was wreck my bed
And in the morning kick me in the head.
Oh Maggie I couldn't have tried any more.
You led me away from home cause you didn't wanna be alone
You stole my heart I couldn't leave you if I tried.

I suppose I could collect my books and get on back to school.
Or steal my daddy's cue - make a living out of playing pool.
Or find myself a rock and roll band that needs a helpin' hand.
Oh Maggie I wished I'd never seen your face.

You made a first class fool out of me
But I'm as blind as a fool can be
You stole my heart, but I love you anyway.

Maggie I wished I'd never seen your face
I'll get on back home one of these days.

Overall Meaning

The song "Maggie May" by Ben Mills is a heartfelt expression of regret and pain that comes with falling in love with the wrong person. In the opening lines, the singer wakes Maggie up to let her know that he has something important to say. He confesses that he needs to go back to school as it's already late September, and he feels like he is being used by Maggie. Despite making Maggie laugh and feeling like she was everything to him, he feels that he couldn't have tried any harder. Moreover, Maggie led him away from home, stealing his heart and soul, which hurt him deeply.

The second verse takes an emotional turn as the singer addresses Maggie's aging appearance, which doesn't bother him, as he still loves her. He remembers all the times Maggie made him laugh without any coaxing, which makes his love for her even more intense. However, he feels betrayed after Maggie turned from being a friend to his lover, making him feel used because she only wanted him for her satisfaction. She wrecked his bed without any consideration for how it made him feel, which shows her lack of empathy, causing him deep pain.

In conclusion, "Maggie May" reveals the singer's pain and regret as he remembers the time he shared with Maggie. Despite all the hurt she caused him, he still loves her but wishes he'd never met her. It shows how love could blind a person and make them vulnerable to hurt, even from the ones they trust the most.
