Driver
Bennett Coast Lyrics

Can't see me in the mirror
Sixteen, all ears
Now we're five months in the meter
Always, I'll be here always
Wanna see on my side?
This time I won't fall so free
Come and see on my side
This time I won't fall so free

What you gotta assume is I got keys on the dashboard
Waiting for a driver
What you gotta assume is I got keys on the dashboard
Waiting for a driver, I'm not waiting for a driver, I got

When the pedal brake separates from my car
At least I'm not alone, I need you by my side
Collide with me
I'm speeding to my starlight
If the only way I could get to your heart
Is to lose control, I guess I'm a lost cause
Come fly with me
I'm speeding to my starlight (oh)

I was wishing you would say so
Come down, stay home
Had a vision on the stage though
Come down, stay home
I was wishing you would say so
Come down, I'm watching all the lanes collide

What you gotta assume is I got keys on the dashboard
Waiting for a driver
What you gotta assume is I got keys on the dashboard
Waiting for a driver, I'm not waiting for a driver, I got
What you gotta assume is I got keys on my dashboard
Waiting for a driver
What you gotta assume is I got keys on my dashboard
Waiting for a driver, I'm not waiting for a driver, I got mileage

Yo
Eight dollars at Goodwill
Oh, that's sick

the number of metaphors and connections for Driver is actually insane
- getting your driver's license is seen as a time of growing up
- a contradiction that Bennet doesn't want to drive and needs a driver in the lyrics, but is the one driving in the video
- Present Bennet might be seen driving to talk to Past Bennet, messing things up along the way in a rebellious way
- The RC car spinning out of control and catching on fire - "if the to get to your car is to lose control then i guess i''m a lost cause"
- "you can't see me in the mirror, 16, all ears" might be referring to not wanting to get in the car because he is afraid of growing up. he literally isn't in the car or he is too small to see himself in the mirror. he cant or doesn't want to see out the windshield - he just wants to listen. could also be a play on blindspots.
- "i'm watching the lanes collide" could be referring to all his timelines and memories crashing into one giant revelation about growing up
- "come fly with me and speed into my starlight" could be telling his past self this, playing on the word SPEED which is dangerous and one should not do
- "When the pedal, brakes (breaks), separate from my car" Without a gas pedal you can't move the car. without brakes, you are sure to crash (the car ends up in a pool in the video, showing the Present Bennet finding this woman who becomes the passenger. it seems like he was looking for her on his journey)
- Driver can also be taken as like "the driver of our own fate" or from google "part in a mechanism that receives power directly and transmits motion to other parts". Bennet is the driver of who he wanted to become, though it may have been scary for him when he was younger.
- and i can assure you there is much more that i missed. it even links back to Bender. this shit is just insane well done bennet you're a legend. going to bump this all the time from now on

Maybe at times it might seem like you are putting so much work and getting nothing in return but real talent never goes to waste and that’s what you have. Keep believing and keep making beautiful art like you have always been doing and success will follow. Love your work, proud to be a fan
