Love Look Away
Bennett Tony Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Love, look away from me
Fly when you pass my door
Fly and get lost at sea
Call it a day
Love, let us say we're through
No good are you for me
Wanting you so I try too much
After you go I cry too much
Love, look away
Lonely though I may be
Leave me and set me free
Look away, look away, look away from me
Leave me and set me free
Look away, look away, look away from me
The lyrics of "Love, Look Away" by Tony Bennett convey the emotions of heartbreak and the realization that a relationship cannot continue. The singer is pleading with love itself to distance itself from them, asking it to fly away and let them be alone. They acknowledge that the love they once shared has become toxic and no longer brings any good to either of them.
The first verse captures the singer's desperate plea for love to leave their life. They want love to pass by their door and get lost at sea, emphasizing how they no longer want any association with it. This imagery suggests a desire for distance and separation, as the singer wants to move on from the pain that love has caused.
In the second verse, the singer acknowledges that it's time to end the relationship. They express that both parties are not suitable for each other anymore, implying that their love has become unhealthy or incompatible. There is a sense of self-awareness in admitting that they have been trying too hard to make things work, and that the aftermath of their departure will bring about excessive sadness and tears.
As the song progresses, the repeated plea to "look away" signifies the singer's yearning for freedom and liberation from the burden of unrequited love. They want to be left alone to heal and rebuild their life without the presence of love. The final lines of the song reinforce this sentiment, as they emphasize the necessity of leaving behind the pain and moving forward.
In summary, "Love, Look Away" delves into the anguish of a broken relationship and the need for separation. The lyrics encapsulate the singer's longing for a release from a toxic love and an opportunity to find solace and healing.

You know, I was listening to Tony Bennett driving Northside on the quays in Dublin today and thought of the people who went before in Dublin and how the city has changed in so many ways, but hopefully for the better. Wow, that chorus of singers in the middle would bring tears to a glass eye!😂 God Bless Tony. I saw you in the Bord Gais with family in 2012. What a performance! The song has a melancholic feeling which made me sad while driving down the quays.

I think Anita Bryant had a version of this later on . Would the theme of the misical be culturally incorrect in 2021?

Yes, I just streamed it tonight. It is definitely dated, with ridiculous stereotypes of Asians and of women. And men, too. But this song, Love Look Away is still gorgeous -- and a bit mysterious -- all these years later.
