Symphony
Benny Goodman and His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Symphony
Symphony of love
Music from above
How does it start?

You walk in
And the song begins
Singing violins start in my heart

Then you speak
The melody seems to rise
Then you sigh
It sighs and it softly dies

Symphony
Sing to me

Then we kiss
And it's clear to me

When you're near to me
You are my symphony

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Benny Goodman's "Symphony" describe the transformation love brings to one's life. The song starts by comparing love to a symphony, a musical composition played by an orchestra. The first line "Symphony of love" sets the tone for the whole song, and by "Music from above," Goodman suggests that love is a natural and divine phenomenon. The question "How does it start?" implies the singer is curious about how love commences.

The second verse describes how the meeting with a significant other can transition into a love story. The line "You walk in, and the song begins," implies that meeting the person instantaneously initiates the romance. The phrase "Singing violins start in my heart" depicts the singer's heartstrings being plucked by the sight of the person they love. The third stanza describes how talking, sighing, and whispering blend with the melody playing in the individual's heart. The love story being illustrated in the lyrics of "Symphony" peaks when they kiss, and they hear the symphony clearly. It's a beautiful way of saying that true love takes two people to make it real, and that's what the singer has found.

In conclusion, Benny Goodman's "Symphony" is a beautiful and sweet love song that captures the essence of falling in love. The metaphors utilized, comparing love to a symphony, make the lyrics poetic and imaginative, providing space for listeners to interpret love in their way.

I love this song so much! I first heard it from my grandmother who had this on tape and I fell in love instantly. I played it over nd over again. I finally got me hands on a record of it, but unfortunately it has long since been lost in a move to another state. It makes me so happy that I can still access it here on YouTube <3

Ah yes Benny Goodman, The King of Swing Music. I have been told that the demise of the big band was because bands were not playing dance music. A few exceptions were Lawrence Welk and Guy Lombardo , who continued on for many years. Benny's music always makes me want to dance.

It seems that this late Swing Era edition of the BG band is sometimes dismissed in comparison with the clarinetist's earlier crews. OK, this outfit wasn't Woody Herman's, Boyd Rayburn's or Stan Kenton's in terms of modernity, but it swung, certainly more than the latter two examples -- and that's what counts most to me. Liza was a fine singer; she was really the last Goodman chirp to stay long enough to cut more than just a few sides.
