Boyfriend
Best Coast Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I wish he was my boyfriend
I wish he was my boyfriend
I'd love him to the very end
But instead he's just a friend
I wish he was my boyfriend

There's nothing worse than sitting all alone at home
And waiting waiting waiting waiting by the phone
I hope that he's at home
Waiting by his phone
I wonder if he knows
That I want him

I wish he was my boyfriend
I wish he was my boyfriend
I'd love him to the very end but instead he's just a friend
I wish he was my boyfriend

The other girl is not like me
She's prettier and skinnier
She has a college degree
I dropped out when I was seventeen
If only I could get her out of the picture
Then he would know how much I want him

One day I'll make him mine
And we'll be together all the time
We'll sit and watch the sun rise
And gaze into each others eyes
And know that he knows
I know that he knows
That he wants to be my boyfriend

Boyfriend
Boyfriend
I'd love him to the very end
But instead he's just a friend
I wish he was my boyfriend
I wish he was my boyfriend
I'd love him to the very end

But instead he's just a friend
I wish he was my boyfriend

Overall Meaning

The song "Boyfriend" by Best Coast speaks about the desire to take a friendship to the next level of a romantic relationship. The singer expresses her feelings about a male friend, stating that she wishes he was her boyfriend and that she loves him to the very end. She says that waiting by the phone and hoping he will call is torture, and she wonders if he knows that she wants him.

The verses describe her feelings of inadequacy when comparing herself to another girl who is "prettier and skinnier" and has a college degree, while she herself dropped out of college at the age of 17. She expresses how she longs to have him for herself, and if only the other girl was not in the picture, he would know how much she wants to be with him.

The chorus repeats the wish for him to be her boyfriend, stating that the relationship would be so fulfilling if only he felt the same way. The singer dreams of sitting with him, watching the sun rise and gazing into each other's eyes, feeling secure in the knowledge that he wants to be with her.

Overall, "Boyfriend" is a song that captures the sense of longing that many people feel towards a friend with whom they would like to have a romantic relationship. It delicately portrays the feelings of insecurity and compares the singer against another potential love interest. Yet, at its heart, the song speaks of the desire for a romantic connection that is still out of reach.

Best Coast, Wavves, Neon Indian, Washed Out, all sorts of different bands that I used to listen to during the beginning of the 2010s. I miss that time. Was really something special.
