Woman You've Been Dreaming Of
Beth Hart Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
What about your kids and the words they pray
I promise to be just like I was before
But you can't hold a man
When he's holding out for more
I found another letter in your shirt
I can't even tell ya what's left to hurt
Guess some women win
Some women lose
You've been talking in your sleep
Every secret that you keep
And I know you got a woman you've been dreaming of
Every second of the night
I've been holding on so tight
Cause I know I'm not the woman you've been dreaming of
I picked up your clothes from the laundry mat
Brushed back the feather from your hat
Washed all the dishes and swept up the floors
But you can't keep a man
When he's looking for the door
Anymore
You've been talking in your sleep
Every secret that you keep
And I know you got a woman you've been dreaming of
Every second of the night
I've been holding on so tight
Cause I know I'm not the woman you've been dreaming of
When you're calling out her name
I'll be taking all the blame
Cause I know I'm not the woman that you really love
And been dreaming of
The lyrics of Beth Hart's song "Woman You’ve Been Dreaming Of" depict a woman who has been betrayed by her significant other. She implores him to consider their twenty-year long relationship, their children, and their prayers before walking away from her, while he is not able to keep himself tied down to her because he's looking for "more." She discovers a letter that is likely from a mistress, and that causes her to doubt herself and her relationship with him, wondering who comes on top in love and life, with some women winning and some losing. She also talks about how she has been taking care of him untiringly, alluding to the loads of laundry and cooking dishes that she has cleaned, but she knows that it won't make a difference because you can't keep a man if they are looking for a door. Throughout the song, she reflects on his infidelity and acknowledges that she is not the woman he is looking for, as evidenced by his dreams and, consequently, his sleep-talking. Despite this, she still hangs on to him for dear life, wishing that the woman of his dreams was her and taking the blame when he calls out for someone else's name.
The song's lyrics are quite intricate, portraying the insecurities and heartaches that stem from a toxic relationship. The use of metaphors such as "20 years," "holding out for more," and "looking for the door" accentuates the man's fickleness and inability to commit. The phrase "some women win, some women lose" exemplifies how such scenarios can be unpredictable and disastrous in the long run. Beth Hart's raw, emotional delivery brings the song's poignant message to life, evoking empathy and resonating with listeners who have undergone similar heartbreaks.
