A Typical Love
Betty Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's love, love
It's love
A typical love

I've read the stories in the magazines
I've seen romance on the TV screen
But, baby, this is better, this is real
This is how I feel

Me and you, you and me
We can see simple reality
The time that's together
Let's keep it forever
Come on, let me tell you all about

It's love, love
It's love
A typical love

Get in my car
We'll drive, drive, drive, drive
Take the trip of a lifetime
Let's leave everything we knew behind
Now that I'm yours and you're mine

Here we go, here we go, here we go
We're moving fast but we'll take it slow
The time that's together
Let's keep it forever
Come on, let me tell you all about

It's love, love
It's love
A typical love

This is just a typical love
Oooooh
This is just a typical love
Oh, it's so much better
This is just a typical love
Oh, it's so much better
This is just a typical love

It's love

Lock the door
What will this moment bring?
Get ready for anything
This is just like it's supposed to be
And we fit perfectly

Hold me tight, hold me tight, hold me tight
All the poets in the world are right
The time that's together
Let's keep it forever
Come on, let me tell you all about

It's love, love
It's love
A typical love

It's love, love
It's love
A typical love

Love!

Overall Meaning

In Betty's song "A Typical Love", the singer is expressing her feelings towards her lover and describing their relationship as a typical love, but not in a negative sense. She explains that although she has seen and read about love stories in magazines and on TV screens, their love is better and real. Betty insists that they are keeping it simple, taking things slow and enjoying each other's company without pretense. She wants to spend her time with him forever and tells him that all the poets were right. They fit perfectly and this is how it was supposed to be. Betty concludes that their love is indeed typical but better in every way.

The song is perhaps a response to the idealistic portrayal of love in movies and shows, where love stories usually involve grand gestures and extraordinary circumstances that are far from realistic. Betty makes a case for uncomplicated love, where it's just two people enjoying each other's company with no need for theatrics. The song's lyrics demonstrate Betty's ability to paint romantic imagery of love that one can dream of.

My thoughts as they came:
- oh this is inspired by All Too Well and I LOVE it
- the cardigan!
- THERE'S A MIRRORBALL
- SHE PULLED UP IN A CAR AND SAID 'GET IN THE CAR!'
- the stars!
- oh my gosh I love how James' POV switched between the two girls!
- hehe the ending!!!
- the credits 🥰
Sophia, this awesome! I'm not just saying that - this is such a well-made film and you are super talented. Thank you so much for sharing and visualising what we all daydream about (because, let's be real, who doesn't listen to august or betty and have the entire thing play out in their head). I hope Taylor sees this because DAMN it's such a love letter to her music, film-making and Easter egg-ing. Don't stop making movies - I think you could go a long way! xx

“In my head, Betty and August decided they could do much better and threw their drinks in James face.” - Shots By Sophia 2023

Yessss!!!!! I love the ending!! My heart has always gone out for Augustine and I never really liked that Taylor said James and Betty got back together — especially since “betty” isn’t a good apology song - here he is, thinking of apologizing but in the same breath is calling her friends stupid??

Mari Lima

In this version sure. But in August, Augustine knows James has a girlfriend. I would throw the drink on James, but Augustine is no saint

Suspicious Star

@Laura RothMy heart has always been there for Betty but it depends on whether or not August knew that James was in a relationship. If she didn’t know, then I feel bad. But if she did, then I’m on Betty’s side.

Suspicious Star

@Mari LimaYeah, I agree. Unless August didn’t actually know or did think Betty was cheating on James first, then my sympathy also goes out to her after Betty. But if she willingly got with a guy who was in a relationship, she should have known she wasn’t the one. I honestly think all of these characters were at fault in a way, just not as much as another (James first, August second, and Betty last).

This was genuinely STUNNING. At first, I thought the girl was Inez running off to spread the goss about who Betty was dancing with but then BOOM she was August OMG!!!! You did such an amazing job of also showing the hurt August would've felt </3 Absolutely wonderful, please keep making films like this!!!

Zoey Toy

Same I thought it was inez !!!

This is EXACTLY how I pictured the folklore love triangle between Betty, James, & Augustine. I love how Betty actually wore a cardigan throughout the film. And how all the small details from the song August, cardigan, Betty all align, like the boy dancing with Betty, or the car that Augustine drives to pick up James.

jenna m

this is beautiful. i love the scene where august actually pulled up and said “get in the car”. there was so much effort put into this and everyone really did an amazing job!! ❤️

Kayla Gamebrain

The girl is supposed to be called August? Isn't she betty??
