Work It Out
Beyonce Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Sing it girl)

How ya doin', honey, baby
You know I don't ask for much but
For a girl spendin' time alone
Can be pretty rough

But I get a knock on my door
You know it's yours for sure
We can't wait for the bedroom so
We just hit the floor (sing it girl)

Is y'all alright?
I don't know
But I know what's happened to me, girl, hey (sing it y'all)
Is y'all alright?
Uh, break it down now (sing it girls)

Is y'all alright?
I don't know
But I know what's happened to me, girl
Is y'all alright?
Uh, break it down now

See you gotta work it out
See you gotta work it out
A brotha gotta work it out

Child, blow your horn now
Come on, child, blow your horn now
Child, blow your horn now
Come on, child, blow your horn now

So we shakin' back and forth now
Just keep it coming babe
Treat my body like a guitar
You got to, you got to keep on strumming babe
But in the back of my mind
(I wonder) is it gonna be the last time
Well if it ain't nobody loving and you gon' keep it coming
Well baby with me that's fine

Is y'all alright?
I don't know but I know what's happening to me girl
Is y'all alright?
Uh, break it down now (sing it, c'mon)

Is y'all alright?
I don't know but I know what's happening to me, girl (c'mon)
Is y'all alright, uh?
Huh, break it down now

See you gotta work it out (sing it)
See you gotta work it out
Brotha gotta work it out, ohh whoa

Child, blow your horn now (hey)
Come on, child, blow your horn now
Child, blow your horn now
Come on, child, blow your horn now

I like this!
Oh hey
Uh look it here, ha bridge

So baby hold me
Like you don't wanna let go
I'm feeling foxy
'Cause boy you working it out
Daddy you given me a taste of your honey
I want the whole bee hive
I'm gonna call you my sugar
'Cause I (I) had the sweetest time (the sweetest time)

See you gotta work it out
See you gotta work it out
Brotha gotta work it out

I like it when the horn go
I like it when the horn go
I like it when the horn go
I like it when the horn go

Ha! Austin better work it out
Ha! Foxy better work it out

Ha! AP3 better work it out
Ha! AP3 better work it out

Overall Meaning

In "Work it Out" by Beyonce, she sings about how hard it can be to be alone, but when her lover comes knocking on her door, they are ready to hit the dance floor instead of waiting for the bedroom. She encourages everyone to "work it out" and "blow their horn," using the metaphor of playing a guitar to describe how her lover should treat her body. Though she wonders if this will be the last time, as long as they keep coming back to each other, everything will be okay.

@Ciclopea2

One of the funkiest most underrated Beyoncé songs, she stood out as an original and set trends instead of following them, a unique Diva, love this era.

@jackdalton3246

Ciclopea2 you heard of Tina turner? That’s her style right there.

@chinonyeezeamii4221

CICLOPEA2, Big lie. She copied Tina Turner to the max in this video. Useless video with that thrusting scene.

@steflondon88

seems very Tina Turner here.

You guys are spot on in this comment section. I’d like to add that she was also inspired greatly by the legendary Pam Grier during this era as well. From the afro to the character “Foxy Cleopatra “ to the kick and punch that she does in this video. In fact, Pam Grier did the same kick and punch in the 1970s iconic blaxploitation film “Foxy Brown”. Just take a look at the opening scene. I remember Beyonce saying that she studied Pam Grier’s work before filming this movie. Although I’m a millennial, I believe in studying the architects and pioneers in the business.

How could she copy Amerie when her record dropped years before Amerie even started producing her album?
Don't try to rewrite history without at least getting the facts.
