Big Head Todd and The Monsters – singer-guitarist Todd Park Mohr, bassist-singer Rob Squires, drummer-singer Brian Nevin and keyboardist-guitarist-singer Jeremy Lawton -- could have begun resting on their laurels back in 1993, when their Top 10 singles “Bittersweet,” “Broken Hearted Savior,” “Circle” and “It’s Alright” pushed the album Sister Sweetly to platinum certification. However, Mohr says, “I’ve fought throughout our career not to be a one-trick pony, to be the kind of band that has depth and diversity in its catalogue. I’m a fan of this band, and I’m constantly looking forward to what comes next.”
The essence of Big Head Todd and The Monsters – a rootsy, emotionally direct variety of rock ’n’ roll that lends itself particularly well to a live setting – has been winning fans since Mohr, Rob Squires and Brian Nevin started playing together in high school (Jeremy Lawton joined in 2004). Needless to say, the three never expected to be in the same band at this late date, but, as Mohr points out, “It was a really fortunate combination of musical personalities, and we’re still partners in every sense of the word.”
The band spent seven years developing their chemistry and amassing a following, boosted significantly by the independent releases Another Mayberry (1989) and Midnight Radio (1990), before being “discovered” by the listening public at large with 1993’s Sister Sweetly. After a major-label stint (Sister Sweetly, 1994’s Stratagem, 1997’s Beautiful World), during which the trio increasingly found itself frustrated artistically, they reclaimed their independent status (2001’s Riviera, 2004’s Crimes of Passion). “If it were not for our ability to do things for ourselves, we would have disappeared a long time ago,” Mohr allows.
Tower
Big Head Todd and the Monsters Lyrics

In an empty space
Keep you to your lazy ways, dream late
A love affair, an end too soon, swept away,
And left unused
I want to see, if you're amused
Or alive
Walkin' 'round the tower of love
I can't climb up
Seems like every time I look up
Rain's comin' down
Storm clouds above
I want to sleep beside you now,
And leave behind the world without
Deep inside and there's none to count
Or untie
I want to be the one you break, and take you
To the higher place
Just believe and I can make you fly
Walkin' 'round the tower of love
Stuck on the ground
I can't climb up
Seems like every time I look up
Rain's comin' down
Storm clouds above
What is done can keep you down, and only love
Can turn around
And yesterday won't make a sound as you climb
The lyrics to "Tower" by Big Head Todd and the Monsters is seemingly about a longing desire for someone's affection and connection, so much so that the singer wants to be their sunshine, their weekend, and the one they dream with. The lyrics suggest that the singer wants to share the lazy days of love and lose themselves in a love affair, to be with someone so completely that they are the one who brings them to the highest of places. However, the singer struggles with the monumental task of climbing a seemingly insurmountable obstacle, the metaphorical tower of love. It seems as though every time they try to climb, it ends up raining, and storm clouds above seem to signify that something greater is holding them back.
The lyrics suggest that the singer knows that in life, some things can keep you down, but love can turn things around. They hope that yesterday won't be a factor as they climb towards this love, where they can "break" and "take" one another to a higher plane. The song leaves us with the idea that love is an all-encompassing force that can bring people to greater heights if they just believe in it.
